Q about A/D/S

I have two Tyranitars I haven't leveled up yet. Both 91 IV, one is 15/11/15 and the other is 15/15/11. I think I read that having the stamina higher is better in this case? I'm going to use it for attacking. (I still don't understand why people put them in gyms, super easy and fun to take them down) I'm lvl 37.

On a related note, how much different is there between 1-2 points on each stat? If attack is 15, vs 14 and 13.

Higher Stamina is generally the better option. More stamina = more damage it can take and the faster the charge attack will fill.

I believe the difference between stats, at least attack, is typically a couple of power ups per point. E.g. a level 30 mon with 15 attack would be roughly equivalent to a level 31 mon with 14 attack, and a level 32 with 13 attack.

More HP doesn't make your energy fill faster, it's still 2 damage = 1 energy.

The difference between 11 and 15 HP IV is only 3 HP which will rarely make a difference, as the one with less HP also has higher defence so will take less damage from a charge move which gives it about the same survivability.

So unless you're at 1 HP with the higher HP Tyranitar and you're exactly at the required energy to use a special move, and you're actually able to get the charge move off before fainting, the IVs didn't make a difference.

Differences in stamina for energy gain really only matters between different species of pokemon, like Lapras vs Cloyster. Might be a consideration if it was a wild catch with very low stamina IV vs high IV. All egg hatches and raid catches have 10+ in each IV though. The difference between 10 and 15 stamina IV is only about 3-4 HP which will only equate to 1-2 extra energy gain.

Attack IVs only have a meaningful difference at quick move damage breakpoints - the level where your quick move damage increases by 1.

Each point below 15 usually requires one more power up to reach that breakpoint, though there are also cases where the breakpoint is the same for several IVs, or require 2 power ups.

So for example a Machamp reaches a damage breakpoint for Counter against Tyranitar at level 36 with 15 attack. At level 35.5 Counter will deal 15 damage, but at 36 it increases to 16.

If your attack IV is 14, the breakpoint is at 36.5, requiring an extra power up, 13 is at 37 and so on, but only in this specific case of Machamp vs Tyranitar.

So lower attack IVs usually mean you have to power up further if you want to reach a damage breakpoint, and power ups are more costly the higher you go.

If there isn't a breakpoint then the difference in attack IV between 2 same-species Pokemon is minimal, you're only looking at a few points of damage on your charge move, which is less important than quick move damage as they are used less often.

Besides fringe cases like Mewtwo's Confusion vs Gengar where it needs 15 stamina and defence at 32 just to get one Shadow Ball off before fainting, differences in stamina and defence IVs are usually not significant between 10 and 15 points.

Powering up a Pokemon so that in theory, it can survive an extra quick move from a boss won't always make a difference as it's charge move usage is unpredictable and will probably overkill you anyway.

If I had to choose between these 2 Tyranitars, then I'd choose the one with 15 defence. If it does make a difference in Mewtwo's quick move damage, it will make a bigger difference than 3 extra HP, and Crunch has low energy requirement plus hits soon in the animation that getting an extra Crunch off before fainting is not unreasonable.

A few thoughts.
''Besides fringe cases like Mewtwo's Confusion vs Gengar where it needs 15 stamina and defence at 32 just to get one Shadow Ball off before fainting, differences in stamina and defence IVs are usually not significant between 10 and 15 points.''

Gengar will most likely be at lvl 36 against mewtwo since SC have break points on mew and celebi. lvl 36 gengar will get a SB even if 10 stamina. I'd say attack almost must be 13-15 (in order to get breakpoint) and stamina on 10 will be fine.

Power them both up. People put them in gyms because when they feed them they may get more precious larvitar candy.
