How do you name your pokemons for easier searching?

I usually put "!" as the first character for the usual attackers/raiders, followed by its A/D/S, then level. So my machamp is "!131314 36" and my golem is "!141314 27".

When I saw the Japanese guy that broadcasts the first Mewtwo raid (and btw very sorry for him not to catch it), he names his pokemon with "FDF", DFE" etc as suffix. I don't understand his naming methodology. Then my brother, who knows computer science, told me he uses hexadecimal (i.e. single digit 0-9, then A-F to represent 10-15). So his FDF stands for 151315 and DFE 131513. I think this is a great methodology and one can actually also put the moveset in the name (I cannot as i do not have enough space). So I am thinking adopting his methodology, but maybe have A stands for 15, B for 14 etc as I don't know hex anyway.

I made another thread a week or 2 ago on this page, you can try searching it or googling it to see if anything comes up. A lot of interesting responses there.

But wow, I didn't know I have been using hexadecimal this whole time, but like you, I thought about using A as 15 and F as 10, and thus I name my 15/14/15 Machamp a ABA while my 13/9/15 Machamp is a C9A.

I begin it with a # and a Chinese character for the prefix of the typing of attacks (it saves you character space but it helps I am a Chinese speaker, use whatever works for you)

For example if I have a Gyarados with Dragon attacks I still treat it as a dragon rather than water/flying. My 87 Gyarados with 14/10/15 and DT/OR would be named thus:

龍 BFA DTOR

I've been using hex since the beginning. Base16 is a natural fit for IVs. I'd recommend sticking with the standard where A=10, B=11 otherwise it's not hex.

"Otherwise it's not hex"
And why is that a requirement? If someone elses naming system works for them, why change it.

Because you want to communicate with others. If you have an established system for naming 1-15 with only one character it seems odd to change the ranking. It's like if someone doesn't like the order of 5-9 and wants to reverse them. It works fine until you start working together with someone.

Hexidecimal (base 16) is a well-defined mathematical numbering system, similar to binary (base 2), octal (base 8), and decimal (base 10).

People can use non-positional emojis for all I care. But it wouldn't be hex.

In any case, I personally only use hex in the name for IVs of unevolved mons that I am collecting with the intention of eventually evolving the best one.

After that, I change their names to something less sterile and more fun. My top four B/SE tyranitars are named Frank, Mary, Bob, and Lisa, after some good friends of mine. My Blissey's all have stripper names. Because.. well just because. My Dragonites are named after characters in the Andy Griffith Show (Floyd, Goober, etc. I'm saving candy for Aunt Bea). And my Bite/Crunch ttars are called Cap'n Crunch and Mrs. Crunch.

Whatever works.

The reason I am thinking to use A for 15 and F for 10 is that right now I will see my lower attack monster first when I sort by name. I would rather see my Pokemons with 15 attack first (by using the letter A).

I have slowly been prefixing my frequent defenders with "dd" so I can type that in the search to narrow down to only my good defenders. Allows me to see many choices when I am trying to find something that doesn't share a weakness with the previous defender.

When I am picking attackers, I am usually looking for a specific pokemon so I can just type the first couple letters of its name into the search.

I get it is useful etc, but with a limited amount of info we can put in the name....why do you need to know the Pokemon exact IV values constantly ? Everytime you look at them/use them. To the extent where your Pokemons names are all numbers?

Wouldnt listing maybe it's level, moveset + general IV percentage not be better ? Or a certain icon for a certain IV value and above ? 90%+ 95%+ etc

Or maybe listing it's attack stat if it's an attacker, and moveset ?

Basically I'm asking, how is this info gonna change which you pick ? By knowing it's exact def and stam. Would you not focus on getting some certain Pokemon with IVs that you know you are happy with..then using them based on their lvl and moves ?

I usually remove a Pokemon exact IV values from it's name once I've decided on one to evolve/power up.

I personally, once I know a certain Pokemon has IVs I'm happy with, and I've powered it up, decided it's roll based on moveset (attack or defence) etc etc

I usually like to simply name my Pokemon...with an actual name. Something that fits it's style or typing.

I think it's cooler to have my best Dragonite named...and with some personality, farther than just numbers.

I try to include moveset after the name if there's room, or an icon indicating attack or defence, and I usually have an icon indicating IVs over 90%

Tells me what I need without using tons of characters.

I used to do exactly that, but beginning with the actual percentage of IV perfection.
98 AAB would be a 98% Pokémon with 15 atk, 15 def, 14 stamina for example. Buy then I started getting rid of the IV characters in favor of an abbreviations of its movesets. Now most of my Pokes haves names like 87 DrbDrc, or 91 RcksStned. Some ended with almost passable names by using this method. My shiny Gyarados goes by 35 DrOutrage and my Espeon is called 98 ConFutsi

I like to give my Pokemon creative nicknames that seem suitable to their traits to give them uniqueness. Also, if my Pokemon have perfect IVs, then I add an asterisk to their name so I know it has perfect IVs.

base"stat"= base stat of the final form of the pokemon
position1: ((baseSTA+STAiv)/(baseSTA+15)-1)%, rounded to the unit
position2: ((baseATK+ATKiv)/(baseATK+15)-1)%, rounded to the unit
position3: ((baseDEF+DEFiv)/(baseDEF+15)-1)%, rounded to the unit
positions 4 to 6: fast attack abbreviation
position 7 : (level number-20)*2 (using unicode circled numbers to save space, representing two digits with one char)
positions 8 to 10: charge attack abbreviation
position 11: moveset ranking on attack following gamepress tables
position 12: moveset ranking on defense following gamepress tables

How can I input the symbol with the 2 digit numbers within a circle please? That will help a lot. I am using iPhone

Do a search for Unicode characters to copy and paste:

⑬ ⑭ ⑮

I agree, it's nice and everyone understands it.

First: *
Second: Tier (A, B, C)
Third: Name of Pokemon, first 4 letters
Fourth : Moveset (usually 4 letters)
Fifth and last: IV

I use a single symbol/letter to denote iv range, i.e.:
! = >82.2%
S = 67.7-80%
D = 51.1-64.4%
- = <64.4%

Next, I will put actual IV if calculated.

Next are move sets, quick first, followed by charged. Each is denoted by an emoji for type and letter abbreviation. Here is my current working emoji list:
♉ Bug
⚫ Dark
♈ Dragon
⚡ Electric
♥️ Fairy
☝️ Fighting
♨️ Fire
☁️ Flying
৫ Ghost
♻️ Grass
☖ Ground
❄️ Ice
☉ Normal
⚠️ Poison
☯️ Psychic
☗ Rock
✂️ Steel
⛵ Water

The abbreviations are pretty straight forward. Some do require further distinction such as SeBo vs SoBe (Seed Bomb vs. Solar Beam). I also use T, TS, TB (Thunder, Thundershock, Thunderbolt).

I use the favorite star option to mark "simply amazing" mons (>82.2% ivs).

My last tip is for raids. I use "⭐" at the front of names of my raiding mons, especially those that are being used for the current legendary. That allow me to sort by name and all the one's I use for raids show up first. I found that this emoji currently sorts by name first, trumping the "!" This works especially great for re-entry once my team has all fainted since no more searching, just a quick scroll and click at most.

For my non-evolved or to-be-evolved, I simply place my IV notation after the name. This allows me to quickly transfer all low iv mons after an evolving session without risking transferring a low cp, high IV mon. (e.g. "Pidgey-" vs. "Pidgey!"

This is (obviously) just how I do it and in no way am I saying it is the best for everyone. However, the ⭐ at the beginning of the name to allow sorting for raids is amazingly helpful for me and I hope someone else finds it helpful.

P.S. - Android and I use the Gboard keyboard for Pokemon naming since it had almost all the Emojis I use (except ☖☗☉৫).

For gym attacks/raids I sort by alphabet and start with a " / " so they're on the first page. Then (partial) name and move(set). I may add a letter for the t3 boss I want to use this counter for. Example:

/ M Ala PC/FS

(Alakazam, counter for Machamp, moveset)

Some mon, such as my highest CP ones, I name just for fun. My first D'nite is Nessie, the names of the others mean "dragon" in different languages.

I'm less concerned about detailed IV's, except percentages (ex. 100% Lapras).

Whatever works for you!
