This move sucks. 100 damage for a full bar. No doubt it isn't a good Articuno counter. A B/SE Tyranitar will do more damage to a psychic Pokemon than a fire Pokemon with the exact same defensive stats.
Other similar moves like Thunder and Close Combat are considered sub-optimal. Why not Stone Edge?

Because the pokemon with Thunder and Close Combat usually also have the better moves that make those 100 energy moves look bad.

it is rubbish but it is the best stone move available, and it is awesome compared to crunch which is so bad even with STAB and SE it struggles to obtain even that amount of adequacy.

And only crappy Pokémon like dunsparce and sudowoodo gets it (and Legacy omastar Who almost nobody has) Stone Edge is a crappy move even in the mains series, but is the only High damage rock psychal move, so is the prime choice

What are you talking about? It has the 3rd highest DPS in the game

but bad damage per energy.
versus crunch which has great damage per energy but comes out to slowly.
you need something that balances both.

I think stone edge is a great move. Yea the 1 bar sucks but the cool down is extremely short and stone edge on trex hits hard. Also on defense (obviously not ideal at all) if u do get hit with it, it does hit hard and out of nowhere

As others said those who learn Thunder also learn better moves. There is no other good stone move in the game except rock slide and rock blast.

Taking into account animation time combined with damage, stone edge is about on par with zap cannon. It's worse than Future sight, hydro pump and overheat, but better than earthquake and fire blast.

Stone edge happens to be super effective against a lot of important pokemon aswell. So i wouldn't say it sucks.

No, Thunder and Close Combat are the correct comparisons for Stone Edge. All three are 100 damage for 100 energy. Close Combat and Stone Edge are 2.3s long, and Thunder is 2.4s long.
