what level are you? its absolutely worth powering up. 100% gyarados....forget the moveset. one very important thing often overlooked is the CP a pokemon can get you. put aside IV and moveset for a minute, if you have a pokemon that can put you at the top spot in a level 8+ gym thats already a reason to want it. gyarados has the 4th highest max cp and one of only 5 that can break 3000. if you are level 30 with a 100% gyarados youll be over 2900. i dont know about you but near many gyms that are of high level that hold (aka the gyms that im sure you would target to prestige..ones that hold for a while)- the lowest pokemon is around 2700. you need some guys that have high cp.
second point - twister is not as bad as you think it is. for offense yes its useless. but on defense its pretty annoying to attack into a gyarados with twister. assuming you know how to dodge its alot easier to kill a gyarados with hydro pump- that move is too easy to dodge. dragon pulse is also pretty easy. twister keeps spammin and its very easy to take some hits from it. lastly, dragonite is weak to twister so thats a nice counter to a likely attacker
forget moveset? lol, the moveset is the MOST important of a mon, even if you have a 3k gyarados with twister I can easily destroy with a 1,5k jolteon or raichu, anyone if know how to play can take down a level 10 gym so easy these days, the only thing that can slow them / make them waste a lot of resources are the moves of the mon. Remember that cp scales when attacking enemy gym if you are low level? Anyway do what you want, but I think that wasting dust on a bite/twister gyarados is one of the worst things to do...You will regret when you get a better one
It really isn't that black and white.
I have come to the point that I realized 2 characteristics play the most important role in how fast a gym will get destroyed:
1. The time an attacker is willing to invest to take down a gym.
2. The average CP & species of Pokemon in the gym (will back off some attackers, "Let's try a different gym").
Don't pretend you ever stopped attacking a gym once u found out a gyarados had dragon pulse as a move set instead. That 2 extra potions it might take in the end are also negligible.
Long story short, I disagree that the move set is the most important of a mon.
I have never skipped a gym because a mon has X or Y moveset, what I am saying is that a Gyarados with twister does not worth the dust investment, even if it has 100% IV, if I had one with 90% and dragon pulse I would choose him before the 100% IV with twister, we are talking about almost double DPS, twister 11.11, dragon pulse 21.67, this difference is a lot more important than having 42/45 IV or 45/45 for example, we are talking about how much 30 more cp? or even less maybe, haven't made the calculation
I get your point mate, I even agree with you for a fact.
But thinking rationally, the only thing that matters is (probably) the spot your pokemon gets in a gym. Therefore, 100% IV over 90% IV irrespective of the move set.
I should (rationally) prefer having the 8th position (100% IV Twister) over a 6th position (80% Dragon Pulse) which isn't a quite uncommon case. I experienced that 30 CP can means a lot these days regarding gym positioning.
I know what you mean, it's true that gym position rationally is important, but I am trying to say is that for me, in my town at least, it is not, gyms are hardly seen at more than level 6-7 and when someone attacks a gym it takes it all the way down, that's is the reason for me to prefer dragon pulse over twister, it will make the overall gym a bit stronger, not my position, I have been playing since day 1 and the most time I have keeped a gym was a week a long time ago, here the gyms change like 10 times each day, so I prefer to put it a better move defender mon so it makes the attacker lose more time. With twister even bite will hit harder and the attacker just have to stand and tap without even dodging a single attack to kill the gyarados.
Thumbs up for your explanation. It indeed depends on someones personal living area and situation what is best for him. Even then, one can decide not to power up a twister gyarados to solely focus on "best" Pokemons.
I used to play the game like that in my active times. Now that I got less active I experienced that I prefer this rational thinking as explained above. It could sometimes save me a some coins per day. I don't want to go out on a daily basis to battle gyms and conquer my spot back.
If you can keep them having 30 cp more of course go for it, I have to go out every day to get my coins, if I am really really lucky some day I can keep 1 gym, but most of the days when I wake up my count is to 0 once again, I normally get 4-6 gyms on my way to work and repeat the process each morning, almost 5 months of playing and the most coins I have got without going out and taking gyms again was one day I managed to keep 3 gyms (and I think it was because 2 had the "error" hahahah). I have probably 6-7 times on a level 10 gym and in less than 48 hours it was from another team (also in my town there are a lot of hackers, people that play from home and take all the gyms every day, I have reported like 4 known ones, but Niantic has not done anything about them yet)
Honestly, I would probably behave the same if that was my case. I used to be the owner of more than 10 gyms, 2 updates ago. These days, I am happy if I may wake up having still 3/4 gyms.
Unfortunately, I can't be bothered anymore to go out hunting pidgeys and ratatas with the current shit navigating for rural areas. That's why I sort of quit after FPM shut down. I have one pokestop in my sightings from my house, that's not really going to help me at all finding the Pokemon I want haha
if your gyarados is 3000 and at the top of a gym by the time the attacker gets to it do you really think he cares what the moveset is. if you are able to beat a 3000 gyarados with twister then im sure you can also beat gyarados with dragon pulse...as i mentioned in the first post if you know how to dodge those moves arnt really that great anyways. if the gym is going to fall its going to fall. nobody is suddenly going to stop attacking a gym because dragon pulse is the move and twister is not. having a 100% pokemon thats one of only 5 that can break 3000 is absolutely worth powering up. dont overlook the psychological element in gyms. just making a gym with only high cp guys can be enough to make people avoid it. if a gym is getting attacked your moveset isnt going to be the reason it stands strong...not on gyarados at least.
Personal preference.
The only pokemon I max upgrade are my 100% IV pokemon.
If I obtained a perfect IV gyarados with twister, I would max him out as the CP will reach its peak at level 40 and it will be like a teophy to show off.
If you are playing for practicality, a Gyarados without twister but only say 50% IV stats would be more effective in attacking and defending gyms. They just won't be high up on the gym level.
I would power him up but I recommend yoy don't. Keep it for sure but only as a trophy.
Depends on its current level. At least Bite / Twister is better for defending than Bite / Hydro Pump. But then again, Gyarados isn't that strong defender anyway, the only good thing about it is its high CP which will make it stand high in the gym if that's what you desire. Around where I live, there aren't that many high level players so I will be at the top of the gym no matter what, but for some people it seems to be essential to have every point of CP they can get. It's worth keeping at least, powering it up depends on so many others things that it's impossible to answer.
I believe Gyarados is tremendously overated. His half flying type adds unnecesary weaknesess to him, specially concerning electric types which, when the second generation is out, will play a central rol in metagame with Ampharos. Bite is also a quick move that doesn't satisfy me at all and the posibilty of getting Twister or Dragon Pulse makes it much less worth. If I want to defeat a dragon I would prefer using my Clefable o Wigglytuff which resist dragon type attacks than a Gyarados with Dragon Pulse. Let him go and find a Gyarados with Hydro Pump, that is the only moveset I find viable for this pokemon. 100% IV's pokemon are just to make your friends jealous.
