Evolve a weak eevee into umbreon
I still haven't used the naming trick to get an umbreon because... I dont want one too badly. Vaporeon Flareon Espeon and Jolteon are all to tiers. Of those 4 only Espeon isn't the number 1 of his type (excluding legendaries)
Umbreon is useless on offence. It's a dark type and he's not even listed as a mewtwo counter. It's a good defender but who cares anymore about defence with the new gym system ?
Because im still far from being set eeveelutions wise everytime I get an eevee strong enough to evolve I want to get anything but umbreon.
So i'm considering taking the next weak eevee I catch and use the naming trick on this one just so I get the pokedex entry.
Or should I just be patient instead of wasting 25 candies that could be used to power up an hydropump vaporeon or an overheat flareon...
Because Im never going to invest any stardust into an umbreon maybe the ideal move is to use a lvl30 eevee with terrible iv's so im not tempted to evolve it into a stronger eeveelution ?

I don't know where this Umbreon slander is coming from. A fully powered Umbreon is a menace. "Useless on offence"? Don't make me laugh. It absolutely wrecked house against Lugia that I put it up against. It doesn't have the strength to match Tyranitar, but it has better bulk to stay in the fight longer. It's good even in neutral match-ups. You can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be throwing it at Mewtwo too (assuming it doesn't have Focus Blast). And as you said, it's a good defender. If you put Gyarados, Muk, or Vaporeon in gyms, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to use Umbreon.
Well, Tyranitar is one of the very best in the whole game. So that comparison isn't really fair.
That said, yes, he isn't even close to a Ttar. Even with good movesets....even with "bulk" which is at best comparable to a Tyranitar but an attack stat that is flat out embarrassing in comparison. However, like all Eevolutions in many areas it is much easier and cheaper to bring up an Umbreon to level than other options; especially a Tyranitar. That should be a factor in any thought process of how useful a mon can be. Some dust poor folks cannot get a Tyranitar to lv 30 but they can easily create a lv30 Umbreon.
But if we are being honest, in a raid group where time is an issue, he is not good on offense compared to many other options in most situations. And the fact he lasts a long time doing poor damage is not a good argument against that either.
Umbreon looks cool, but with an attack stat lower than Blissey and slightly higher defense, I'd guess Blissey is better in a raid than Umbreon even...
It's typing is cool and could be a good 6th person to try to do a little damage and survive longer without rejoining (doesn't help with Focus Blast Mewtwo and for Shadow Ball, Blissey/Snorlax should last longer being immune (0.51)), but as someone in no rush to complete my dex, I'd just wait personally.
I have only used 2 name tricks (Vap, Espeon) and still don't have an Umbreon (Level 38+) neither since all high IV Eevees I find have been going to Espeons so I can eventually solo Machamp...
TL:DR - Unless you have to complete the dex now, I'd just wait till all your name trick Eeveelution are super high IVs (mine are both 93%). I'd feel sad to transfer a low or mediocre IV name tricked Eeveelution.
