Pokemon return with zero motivation?

For a long time ago I took over a gym in the woods that was still uncontested. Since then I have been feeding my pokemon so that I can get a golden badge. Now I wonder what will happen when I stopp feeding it? I am a bit worried that my pokemon will never return, because I have heard people saying they need to be knocked out.

They will not return until someone knocks them out. They just stay with zero motivation

not zero, the motivation stops to decay when it reaches 1/5 of the original CP, and it stays like this for around 1 day if i remember well
