Either Rhydon to fight snorlax or cloyster to fight dragonites

In Cloyster and Rhydon

Out Jolteon or Slowbro Depend on the defenders in Your area (many Gyarados keep Jolteon)

There are lots of Gyarados in Gyms in my area right now, which is why I powered the electric doggy up. I love the Slowbro (there are Slowpokes all over the place where I live, so I have four of them), but I guess you're right - it doesn't have a high enough CP.

It seems like the Rhydon's offensive moveset isn't very good. I wonder if I should keep it or just roll the dice and try to get a better one.

Your Rhydon should be good against Snorlax, but mud slap would be more versatile.

Cloyster will do nicely against Lapras, but then your Jolteon will take out most of those.

It depends on what you encounter most. If you get a lot of grasses think about a fire Poke. Round here it's mainly water pokes so I use a pair of Jolteons and a powered up Tangela a lot (prefer Tangela to my Eggys for attack).

I do get a lot of grass Pokemon, and I've tried to evolve a Fire Pokemon! I evolved three Arcanine with Bulldoze. I just evolved a Charizard with Ember/Fire Blast, which isn't very good. It's 1499 CP so I mostly stick it in gyms for people to laugh at. I'm not crazy about the Flareon, because they're so delicate.

It's interesting, because my Vaporeon does a pretty good job on Snorlax. The Exeggutor isn't bad, either. My problem with Rhydon is that he seems to be a one-trick pony, and I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to power up a niche attacker w/ a mediocre offensive moveset (which mine has), which I guess is another question.

For the moment just evolve some 600-650cp eevee (don't mind about IV) to obtain a 2000+ flareon; it should be easy and you will not spend any stardust. Meanwhile you can wait for a good rhydon/arcanine!

It really depends on what's most common in gyms in your area. I couldn't survive without Arcanine in my lineup (to take out Laprases, as well as Exeggutors and other grasses) or Vileplume (my second grass, who takes over Vape-killing duties once my Eggy faints). That said, either a pokemon with ice moves (to take out Dragonite) or an Arcanine with fire moves (to take out Lapras) would be good, depending on which is more common in your area. I find Vaporeon to be quite good at offing Snorlaxes, so I don't think the Rhydon is absolutely necessary.

Don't be fooled by CP.

Rhydon looks like it is a beast, but you will be desappointed.
Defending gyms with him is a disaster. Every water pokemon or grass pokemon kick is ass.
For attacking it might be good against snorlax, but then? Why powering up a pokemon which is good only against 1 pokemon?
Then you will see that Rhydon is veeeery slow. Not easy to dodge and attack.

To me, investing in Rhydon is a waste of stardust.

I would wait for a good Arcanine too!
This is a beast at attacking gyms. You can kill lapras, snorlax, any grass type... Trust me this pokemon is a beast, even if they nerfed him!
Wait for a good one, and you'll see. Try to use your Rhydon on the same defenders and you'll see that Rhydon is not as efficient as it looks like.

Arcanine is way better and can hit a large amount of pokemon.
And it will be the perfect 6th pokemon of your team ;)
