Is PvP even Feasible?

Given the current system, would PvP even work?

Battles in the PoGo world are so FLUID. Pokémon constantly changing out, players constantly dodging. And it's not like mainline pokemon games where you have status moves -- this game is run purely by matchups.

How do you think PvP would operate, if it's ever introduced at all?

I would assume the same as it is. Only thing I'm wondering is how potions and revives will be played out. If we have to use potions everytime we pvp than we won't be pvping very much or we don't have to use any potions at all and it is strickly for fun but we won't get any XP OR the worst part is that we have to buy PVP passes...

Niantic still hasn't figured out gym battling in terms of bugs and lag, and people think we will be able to have 2 people on 2 different devices battle? Not likely.

If they ever get to do it i guess it will be 6 mewtwo teams all over. You can even choose between the 3 charge moves to have best overall damage FS best against mewtwo ShB and best against TTar FB.

The only wisdom will be on the choose of the charge move and the mixing of TTars. Who knows maybe even a lugia can do something as DT and SA are not resisted. Still gona be dealt with ShB.

HoHo with no stab SW dont think is an option.

Not really far away from casual gameplay was on the main games tough

It would be a no brainer though, what's the point in it. Just spoofers and grinders with zero to minimal brain usage.

The game lacks so much in depth. No status changer like toxic, no value changer like amnesia or light screen, no curse set up. No item changer etc.

I loved doing a curse set up on skarmory.

And snorlax with the move set: rest+amnesia+body slam+surf

Those moves are sooo gen 2! Check out Pokémon showdown-it lets you play for free; and it's only battles (no main series schtuff). You and an opponent get to pick specific lineups and customize ivs, evs, movesets, items, abilities, etc., and it essentially allows for the highest levels of play without the time needed for grinding.

I notice a lot of examples in your posts refer to gen2 and it's meta,, you (in particular ~~ allterrainveno) should check it out, I think you would really appreciate it. It takes some time to get adjusted to the new battles but the mind games are real and when you become really good you start guessing their moves and take advantage of them ::))

play.pokemonshowdown.com

It's even mobile friendly. What I did is started with "random battle," the default, and they provide a well balanced universe of all of the current Pokémon + well balanced movesets and levels. I promise you won't regret it.

In regards to this topic, I agree that this game requires minimal strategy outside of typing and movesets. I have faith in Niantic (yes) and I believe overtime we will slowly begin to see a skill gap

Plenty of skill/knowledge already in the game--the correct berry sequence is pivotal

I stopped playing the games after gen 4 but this is fun man. There is also a way to battle others with gen 2 Pokémon (less people play it though) I haven't touched gen2 in a while but I'd be happy to touch base with you if/once GP adds in a feed or chat room feature. It's sooo fun man - I stopped at gen 4 (I'm 24) and derive satisfaction from playing it ✌?️ It would be a good waste of time to use while waiting to board a flight or in a car ride if you don't get sick haha

Well, lets be honest, other than bugs they manage to produce with every update, keep in mind not everyone has a top quality phone. Some phones on the lower end will lag hard, some networks may lag even harder, PvP just dont seem to end well with all these techinical difficulties. These things they need to fix before even going into the mechanics of the gameplay.

PvP will introduce too much competition. Spoofers will get the better of things in many ways and there will be, a lot of complaints lets just say.

I hope they ban legendaries from PvP.

They most likely will-in the competitive scene in the main series people are split into "tiers" by how useful they are in battling. The majority of legendaries break the checks and balances so they are promoted to a high tier. I assume their imposed standard battles would ban the majority of legendaries!

@SpaceOpera - Are you serious ? Ask yourself why gyms have only 6 pokemon ? Everything else flows from there. The only difference between a gym fight vs a PVP fight is that the 6 you see that you need to fight are another person's mon.

This is my theory (I am a product manager and I know how this breed thinks).
1) PvP will be gym centric
2) The battle code mechanics will work like they do now for raids. Private code for pre-arranged fights vs. public codes for one on one fights.
3) You pick 6, they pick 6 and you swap / adjust etc. until the timer runs out
4) Fight time !

What I am guessing about is
1) When can you fight PvP at a gym ? Non raid times is my guess
2) Do you need a pass for PvP fights ? Niantic needs to make money - so, maybe after the 5th fight. So same daily pass mechanic but the daily pass will give you access to 5 PvP fights.
3) Leaderboards ? Maybe not. Maybe just stats the way you see when you fight a gym (remember the player+mon vs. player+mon screen you see)
4) Social mechanics ? Friends, Schedule a fight etc. I doubt it. Legendary raids have already forced people to make connections across their group. I am on a discord group.
5) yes to potions, revives etc. All that will still remain in play.
6) Rewards ? I don't know. If I was the product manager at Niantic, I would think about introducing a "pokemon at stake" mechanic. You put one up, the other person puts one up kinda thing. This goes back to the TCG. This will setup the trade cards mechanics up.

How does this sound ?

There are some good points, but very much restrictive. The idea is for Niantic to engage with their remaining player base to determine what we want / need. For PvP to take place in gyms, people would need to locate a gym which either might not be in the close vicinity for some and for parents wanting to play with their kids after work going physically to a gym after 7 or 8pm might be dangerous.

Keep it simple, let PvP be playable at anywhere, and at any point in time as long as trainers are near to each other. And please, no rubbish PvP passes!
