Where to invest stardust and rare candies
It seems that people are feeling the legendaries are not worth investing? I have lots of rare candies. They occupy so much space. Where should I invest? Is it safe to invest at least 1 of the legendaries? why do people think they are not worth investing? I already have 3 tyranitar and 3 machamp, so I feel reluctant investing more in them.

I suspect Zapdos will have a use for a while; gen 3 doesn't off any especially strong electric types and it isn't until gen 4 when two gen types come into play (magnezone and electivire). I suspect Zapdos will get quite a bit of use until then, especially being part flying which makes the damage Zapdos takes from ground types NVE (immunity * SE = NVE = .51 * 1.4 = .71). It does take SE damage from rock and ice but many ice types are partially water which Zapdos hits SE into. I am going to set 200 candies aside for Zapdos. Other than that, I'll be saving mine primarily for mewtwo and mew, and may slowly transfer some to articuno candies, as gen 3 offers Salamence and Flygon, both of which haaaaate ice as much as dragonite, and then Garchomp in gen 4
Other candy options include:
- transferring enough to lapras, Snorlax, chansey, etc. to have enough stocked up to max/nearly max them out
- saving up for gen 3 mons
- transferring to any 5km buddy distance candy
- Moltres is also nice because it's like Flareon BUT it takes double NVE damage, essentially an immunity, from bug and grass types w00p w00p
The current legendaries? Meh. Dragonite has better stats and moves. Only reason to give a damn about them is their typing, not their ability to sweep gyms.
There are super legendary like Ho Oh. Mewtwo. Or Rayquaza the almighty to come. I think Niantic choose not to include them in the game, as they are OP
Consider what you want to do with them. Articuno is only really good for dragons or bird raids (which end soon). Lugia best use is for Machamp raids. Not sure how valuable a fire attacker in moltres is. Ice, Psychic, and Fire also already have strong mons that the legendaries, while better than, aren't widely better. Electric has value (although great value is the ending bird raids) with the prevalence of gary and vapes. There really isn't a great electric attacker currently. This gives zapdos some use.
The other issue with the birds is that their flying type is bad defensively (in general). It gives weaknesses they don't need. For instance, articuno takes SE damage from a raid zapdos. For moltres and zapdos, current move sets suggest entei and raikou may be slightly better.
All that being said, I will make one Lugia for machamp raids and at least one zapdos. Rare candy is replacable, so you don't need to keep 15000 candies and nothing else. But don't use it all on these birds. I try to hold about 100 to 120.
OK. If legendary are not worth the dust and candy... Uninstall PoGo from your phone then.
There's always been players who put their sight on the future. Others play for the day. It's up to you.
Consider this, Niantic releases 2 gen/year.
- Articuno is going to be the best ice type for at least the next year and a half.
- Zapdos is going to be the strongest electric type for the next 1-2 years to come
- Moltres? Is currently the strongest fire attacker... Ho-ho may be better when/if it gets better moveset.
I don't expect mewtwo in the next 6 months. What to do in the meantime with candy and stardust?
For the ones who won't invest in the current legendaries, I guess that the answer is switch off their phone for a long while and wait for something exciting to happen.
A Flareon army is much easier to assemble than a Moltres army. Same for Jolteon vs Zapdos or Raikou.
Flareon has only 5 attack stat less than Moltres, and has a 2 bar charge move Flamethrower.
Zapdos may be worth candies though, if you can catch one.
For me I will never use any rare candies for legendaries, at least for now.
