Legacy Charizard

I'm someone of the opinion that Legacy moves are all well and good if the moveset is good. I have a Charizard with Fire Spin and Flamethrower. Is it worth me ditching the Flamethrower for Overheat, on the basis that Overheat is so much more powerful?

Flamethrower is just as useful.

I wouldn't touch it. Too big of a risk of getting FireBlast or -- even worse -- Dragon Claw.

Flamethrower is just as fine, perhaps even more useful in gym battles.

Yes, because it's 2-bars so you could get off another charged attack before fainting, whereas with overheat you must fill the full bar. Overheat does have a pretty low charge time though.

Exactly, tho in raid battles it could be more beneficial to have overheat over flamethrower for dodging and/or damage (didn't look into exact numbers admittedly).

2 bar moves are better, esp if you are trying to clear regular gyms...

Pretty much every time, the mon will be dead before you can even fire off a charge move if it's a 1 bar move...For the 2 bar Dragonites with Outrage, it's fire off if it's a tougher mon, or save for the next one and take it out in 1 shot...or save 2 and take out the next two in a row...

I think legacy flamethrower is literally the only advantage charizard has over Moltres, along with access to flying moves.

FS/FT is about 10% slower than FS/OH, so you have 33% chance of gaining 10% more DPS* (More on this later), however, you have a 33% of getting dragon claw, which is 21% worse than FT, and a 33% of getting FB, which surprisingly is actually 1% Better than FT. * FT is 10% worse than overheat and 1% worse than Fireblast, except that it's more nimble, as you'll typically waste less energy since it's a 2 bar move.

The bottom line is I wouldn't change it for the following reasons:

  1. I'd have 1/3 chance of gaining 10%.
  2. I'd have 2/3 chance of getting something (arguably or practically) worse.
  3. Charizard is not an attacker in which I'd invest potentially multiple TM's just to improve 10% in it's damage output.
  4. There are better FS/OH users.
