Alakazam question

I just evolved my 98% Abra into Alakazam. Of course I got Confusion/Shadow Ball as its move sets. What is this Pokémon good for, if anything? I really wanted an elite attacker. Is he worth powering up?

An Alakazam pretty much needs Psychic to be worth powering up, IMO.

Wrong, Alakazam needs Psycho Cut to be a good attacker. An Alakazam with Psycho Cut can just ignore it's charge move if it doesn't have Psychic and still be useful, since Psycho Cut on Alakazam is one of, if not the highest DPS quick move currently available.

However, an Alakazam with Confusion + Psychic is going to far less DPS than an Alakazam only using Psycho Cut because you're not going to be able to use Psychic every time it's available or use Confusion with low downtime, since you'll need to dodge every attack due to Alakazam's low HP pool, resulting in energy waste which results in a loss of DPS.

I'd hold onto it in case we ever get TM's, but otherwise I'd move on. Keeping it low CP as a niche prestiger against Gengars with non-ghost moves and psychic mons may be it's only real use for now. Sorry.

Nah. Don't use a Gengar as an example. Even with Sucker Punch, it will still destroy you.

Definitely don't power it up. He's like Aerodactyl, one moveset or bust. Even with Psycho Cut/Psychic, he's still on the fringe of usefulness
