Let's talk about Lugia and powering one up.

I see a ton of talk about whether it is a good idea to power one up at this point. Let's discuss our takes on it here.

I'll list some points that come to mind for me. Please feel free to disagree or raise some other points of your own.

Pros:
Great "tanky' attacker for Machamp solo raids. If you already have your higher DPS mons and are dying before timing out he could work in more or less the same way that a Dragonite with DT/H does at the end of your lineup.

Good as a general gym sweeper. Depending on what is in there he can probably run through most if not all of it by himself although he will not be especially fast at it.

Sky Attack is a good flying move with STAB. Not a whole lot of good flying move mons with STAB out there right now. That may create some other niche use in the future.

Cons:
When Mewtwo comes out he will fall even further down the rung of psychics for raid purposes where he is not exactly sitting firmly now. And that doesn't include other Psychic mons which will also play a part in future gens.

Stat wise he would be a great defender but he cannot defend.

If you have already powered up DT/H Dragons or have a set working Machamp solo crew it's hard to justify expending resources on Lugia who is at best a lateral move compared to many mons available now. If time is an issue for your solo set he will not help that issue.

While he is a very good gym attacker I feel that the majority of us can already take down most any gym rather easily after the change.

To power him you will likely have to use rare candy. Using rare candy is best imagined as using the best candy for the best mon in the game currently or even mons to come. For example that candy could have been Mewtwo candy. Or tyranitar candy. Or anything. Thus, it is an extremly valuable resource but with a 20K per candy buddy cost it's pretty hard to imagine any justifyable reason to buddy him.

We aren't sure if or when raid bosses will update, rotate or change. When they do, if Machamp is no longer raidable then his arguable use for Machamp soloing is no longer a factor.

What else can you guys add?

As I mentioned in the other thread, Lugia can be a good generalist attacker if you are looking to take down gyms quick. It would basically play the role of Snorlax. HP would actually be the preferred move because then it would be perfect to deal with those pesky Rhydons that seem to be the most annoying for my Dragonite/Snorlax lineup.

Dragon tail as a quick move would also be a solid option against Dragonites.

Lugia served no purpose as a raider, other than being a 6th pokemon to hold down the fort at the end.

Lugia certainly isn't needed, but I would roll with a Dragonite/Lugia team for gyms.

The biggest thing for me is how quickly will the next set of Legendaries come out? I want rare candies and stardust for them, but I can get more stardust and I already have 300 candies sitting around.

Lugia can't learn Wing Attack.

Good catch. Of course I meant Sky Attack and edited.

Let's cross our fingers that he can get aeroblast one day.

I had my friend who just hit lv30 yesterday spending his last dust and rare candies powering up his Lugia as much as he could. He is very proud of it, especially since he is the only one who caught it among our 20 raiders group.

I wanted to tell him to set back and reconsider, but he was so proud and happy that I couldn't.
I'm now glad that I chose to mind my own business, as a lv30 rural trainer he doesn't have much firepower to get through gym and bosses, so Lugia is a good generalist for him. Nice catch buddy! :)

Sometimes you just have to do what makes you happy. 20km for 1 candy? Don't even care. What am I going to do, keep walking a Larvitar?

I'm walking my Articuno. I'm not powering it up and I don't need the candy. It's strictly thematic at this point. I don't need anything.

TL;DR: pretty much what you said-rs biggest pro is its bulk and its biggest con is its comparatively low attack stat.

As blue mentioned, you put WA when you meant to put SA (sky attack)

You pretty much summed it up; it's super bulky but the fire power is just lacking. For that reason, It is outclassed in raids by other greater-dps options.

In the main series it was even better because it had an ability that if it had full health, the attack it receives does 50% of the original damage. This is problematic when Lugia has this ability "multiscale" coupled with a healing move such as roost, that would bring it back to full hp typically, thereby repeating the cycle.

In Go it gets both psychic STAB moves and a flying charge STAB, but it is just outclassed by other psychic types with higher attack stats, which are necessary for raids with less people

I wouldn't spend any rare candy except on the following:
1. Mewtwo
2. Moltres
3. Raikou/Zapdos (Raikou preferred)

Other legendaries are all trophies to me. It's good to have a high IV one but it doesn't matter to me since I won't invest in them anyway.
To me, the point of powering it up, as of now, is only for attacking (previously for CP and gym placement but not anymore). So I will only invest in those who can fight the battles for me, who I can reliably count on. Since the places of my squad are pretty limited, only a certain species of legendaries can serve me better. For example, none of the birds/dogs/cats can do Machamp's job better.
As for Lugia. Can it sweep a gym better than Dragonite? Maybe, but it's too slow. I treasure time as I live in an intense and highly competitive urban area and time means everything. So he's definitely cool looking, and a pretty strong psychic type, but I'm sorry Lugia, you don't have my love.

(And to JHVS)
Yes, it's his sh*tty moves.
Ho-Oh doesn't have a clear purpose to me. If he has a Flying/Fire type quick attack then it's a totally different story.
I mean, come on. Steel Wing is ok (even without STAB), but what is Extrasensory doing there?? (Maybe it's a link to Lugia). And the charge moves. Fire Blast is sub par to Overheat. Brave Bird is sub par to Hurricane. And Solar Beam? Well, it does cause a lot of trouble to Golem and water attackers, but why would you attack a Vaporeon with Ho-Oh then?
So, yes his CP is incredibly high, but don't forget, CP is not the determinant of gym placement now. It's how fast you tap the + button and how fast you sweep a gym before it got refilled by berries.

=====added=====
As for Moltres. He has Fire Spin + Overheat, top circle DPS move set; he has a dual type and a blessing double resistance to Grass; he has 250+ ATK, only 10pts less than Ho-Oh. He's like an upgraded Charizard/Flareon. Definitely my new Fire chief specialist

Ok that is exactly what I figured.

I'm hoping that he gets a better moveset before release because yes, that's a rough group of movesets. It's a shame.

Moltres vs Entei? Same moveset, Moltres a higher attack but Entei a lot more tanky. Regarding weakness/resistances which would you say is better

Until either:
1. we will be able to place them in gyms and the gym defence will actually mater,
2. the raid time limits will be increased for solo players, in that case Lugia will be there like Snorlax and Blissey were before for soloing lvl 10 gyms

for me both Articuno and Lugia are just trophies. Same for every legendary except Mewtwo, Moltres, maybe Entei (I'm Valor :) ), maybe Zapdos.

I spend my rare candies on my 100 IV B/C ttar - and mewtwo when available - not planning on using dust on other legendaries.

I have way more dust than the rare candy I could use to power up so I'm just powering up my 98 Lugia with catch and transfer candy but saving rare candy for the more useful legendaries.

Same for Articuno when I get a good one, I'll power it up but only using the candy I have on hand and not converting rare candy.
