What is “the point” of gyms? ( 2nd thought...)

I am aware that I am low level but comparing gyms “before” and “now” , the present ones are “a joke”. I can fill the slot with 10 cp mon and it will last forever. Ok 50 coins when someone with the mercy kick it out ...but that 's it... no pretiging, no battle, the game seems like being without the goal... what is now the goal actually? I walked my snorlax 2000 miles + but today someone can get it “just like that” ...if... there are still existing players... gyms are with like baby kinder gardens and mostly empty. Mos like 10 cp are now most popular "defenders" ( suicide squad).

The maingoal is to be lucky enough living in a bigger city and spending money on raidpasses nonstop.

The second goal is to buy the super duper anniversary box which is more expensive than buying raid passes and incubators on its own.

The third goal is to burn the community as fast as possible.

How could someone not be toxic with niantics policy..

*edit, Sorry, I just realized you are asking about gyms. Let me explain the maingoal here: Lower level players have a better chance to get their coins. However, coins and dust are reduced drasticially to force you towards the points Ive mentioned already. Spend money $$ :)

Yes I can't find a goal in the game any longer. The only thing is to collect them all after that I don't see a reason to play. And in the end when they turn the servers off you'll have nothing.

Same as the point in having a participation trophy.

A cure I proposed was to reward gym attacking with stardust such that you get the equivalent of 10 stardust / hour per gym's longest sitting Pokémon kicked out, capped at 500, with attacking other gyms up to 5000 stardust per day. It then is more rewarding to kick out a Pokémon that sits longer.

However you seem to have a gym like mine, in a village. It already used to be stagnant before, the difference is in the past it got loaded up to level 10 with spoofers from the nearest town and nobody brought it down, except sometimes other spoofers.

The solution would be to convince someone to start playing and pick another team, or invite rivals take 8-hour turns.

But I agree the gym rewarding is weird. Most days I am hoping that no more than 1 returns. Other days I hope I can stay long enough to get more than a few coins while I know my stagnant gyms will not return me anything. And in the weekend I really hope some stagnant Pokémon returns, otherwise no coins.

The return of investment is quite a joke. I almost quit participating in the arena game completely.
Since the new update I dont spend any real cash and I wont. However I would prefer giving them 10 € instead of trying to obtain 1000 coins. As I said return of investment..

But since I am so displeased with the system, I dont see any reason giving them money for this nonsense.

Yeah... you don't want to end up like this guy. 17 freaking days. I think they buried him in that cemetery.

Best pic to show how dead the gyms is , any player with almost no squad can take that gym and yet no one is even bothered to take it down

What is even more sad that lets say you just going to want to fill your Dex was a main goal ,in some cases that won't happen since raids isn't really working every where ( didn't do any lvl 4 since no one to so it with ) and legendaries will be the same
So thanks niantic

Some thoughts, some relevant, some random
*There are some hardcore players that don't care about the coins (incubators don't matter much anymore), they want to control "their gyms" and get extra balls/potions.
*It is still laborious to fight a 2950 Blissey and not time out, especially with potions being scarce. Only players near my level are even capable
*Earning coins for casual players encourages them to buy raid passes/incubators/lucky eggs.
*A daily spin/catch/raid bonus gets level 25-29 players significant xp to level up.
*Teenagers typically at a disadvantage, not completely free to drive around and play. All year I can lose some sleep, drive 3miles to a lighted city park w/ 3 gyms including 8 pokestops on an 800m loop at midnite. Teenagers that might actually have some friends are now able to catch up a bit. For the community (company) that could be a good thing

The first point. Never cared about coins. I did care about the stardust. There was pride in establishing territory.

A Blissey is still difficult...unless its motivation is depleted. She is tough, maybe, the first time around, but after that, not so much.

More thoughts:
I'm in the residential area of a sizeable city. I can think of 10 gyms within a 1 mile radius. We now are pretty split b/t yellow/blue/red. Even being in a suburban populated area, a handful of players are very influential (i.e. we put in bigger Blisseys and are willing to take them down). Rural people think of the ease of raids in REAL cities (NYC), most other cities have scrambling/risky/unsuccessful raids occurring.

The last few months of the old gyms I would extend myself to be in 12+ gyms split b/t work and home. Right now I care about the 5 nearest me, that I actually use and often see.

One plus, I did a small raid with a rival team's (yellow) level 38 a few days ago. At least I saw that he is a real person and he goes to the spots to knock them down/raise them up. They always seemed organized, all the same few people in the same gyms. Not really, but that loose team was contributing to keep their gyms strong. His territory is about 3 miles away--I'll still attack his edge gyms. However, I'm done with some of the church parking lots they own--turns out Dana Carvey's churchlady (churchman) character is a real type of person.
