Old system;
1) Collect/Hunt more stardust/Candy to power up high IV/CP pokemon to stand top of the Gym.
2) Catch/Evolve Dragonite/Tyranitar for best attacker, Blissey/Snorlax for defender.
3) Catch/Evolve C/CD Machamp to counter Blissey.
4) Learn Prestiging & Dodging skill.
New Update;
1) Choose the correct majority team, place the cute pokemon into Gym and wait for 50 Coin. Else use other account to take him back.
I was super active in the old system. Would defend our gyms/territory and make sure to keep it our colours. Spend a massive amount of dust on epic defenders. Now I have 20-25 defenders that just sit in my poke storage doing nothing.
I drive by gyms I would normally take down but now I don't. Could care less really. Everyone and their dog has Tyranitars, Snorlax, Lapras now. Plus if I knock people out of gyms they get coins. Now they can just sit in those gyms.
Game is dying IMO.
I think it's simplistic to say old is better, or new is better.
Old system was broken because of a ton of reasons, really. Spoofing, shaving, prestiging being a stupid and painful mechanic, Blissey stacking. Yes, it needed a change.
New system however is broken in many ways too. It fixed many of the old issues, to be sure, but introduced new (and significant) flaws.
Broken vs broken is how I'd look at them.
u actually still do 2 and 3 with the new system, what u dont need now is tons of potions for 2nd, 3rd, 4th round against the same blissey.
and if u dont like the "sit and wait" aspect, isnt the old gym worse?

old:
stagnation earns u coins, quiet region get rich
new:
circulation earns u coins, busy region get rich
A lot of majority team player happy because the new system have 5 empty slot waiting for them. Old Gyms you saw >3000CP blissey very often, I myself have 2 >3000 blissey and few wait for Gym rework. New system who want to waste his stardust to max his Blissey any more? Even you put in Max Cp blissey it will drop <3000 an hour later.
It have much more easy to take down Blissey compare to old system. I no think anyone having problem unable to take down Blissey in new system any more.
To defeat the Blissey wasn't the problem in new system anymore, the problem is when defeated the Gym, the majority team put in six mons again, you just wasting time to collect coin for them. And this issue you can see it yourself.
How many coin for me is nothing, I can take whatever Max they give.
Honestly, I got tired of the old system. I enjoyed prestiging and had a bunch of mons to use for that purpose. Eventually the system did get old and I stopped caring as much. I'm definitely not going to say the new system is better, but at least there are some added things. It'll all soak in for awhile until everyone gets complacent again, and that's when the next new thing will come.
