Early thoughts as a low-mid level trainer

Considering that a lot of the changes are intended to benefit low-mid level players like me, and that this forum seems to be filled with jacked up pros who've forgotten what it's like to be a noob, I thought I’d share some thoughts...

1) The fact that first mon in is the last one you fight is a Godsend. I have only one mon > 2000 CP, so in the previous system I was always at the bottom even when I was the one who captured the gym. My gyms would usually remain intact but my mons would get shaved off by my own teammates. Not anymore!

2) It’s also nice that each mon is different, and their CP drops every time you defeat them. Good riddance to your level 10 Blissey towers.

3) The new coin system actually punishes us. As a low-mid level player, I could usually only get into gyms that already had a space open or were new enough to have only 2-3 mons that I could defeat/prestige on my own. My mons rarely lasted over an hour, but if I was lucky I could get another nearby gym quickly and immediately cash out 20 coins. Lower level players need to be strategic and cash out as soon as they can. But with this update, I have no choice in the matter. I captured 5 gyms today but got only 2 coins in return. Under the old system, I could buy an incubator every 10-15 days. Under this system, I expect it will take 2-3 months or more.

4) I don’t power up often but I did push a 92% Vaporeon to just over CP 2000 so I could be semi-competitive and enjoy the game a little. At my level however, even minor power ups are devastating to my stardust supply. If I can no longer recuperate by collecting my 500 stardust per day, then it's going to take much longer than it otherwise would have before I can compete with the rest of you.

5) Raid is only available to level 35+? Well then, I look forward to trying this feature out in a year or two.

  1. 500 dust a day? I got that in no time throwing out berries today. Not to mention fighting.
  2. Calm yourself. They are simply beta testing the difficulty set up against top trainers as well as server load by incriments probably. It will be available to everyone in about a week but a week of beta is way better than getting untested junk that doesn't function correctly.

JHVS,
is there a limit for berry donating?
I started getting errors and I could not feed any more mons. I went to a couple of different gyms and could not feed any of my "team"mates.

at 20 dust per berry it will take a lot of feedings....

I'm not sure. I did my rotation that I just formed (6 gyms for me, new record lol). I left and came back in about an hour or so. I took over a new gym, gave up on one then took over one I lost and was able to give a berry to virtually every mon I ran actross in my gyms. I did this again over an hour and some later. I never got any errors but maybe that process had something to do with it.

Hope that helps.

Edit to add: There were times I could not Berry a mon but I figured it was because his health was full.

The first pokemon in the gym is actually the first one fought, even though it seems like it should be the opposite. So the people that take over the gym will be the easiest to kick out.

WHAT? Aww man, one of my favourite features of the new update doesn't even exist... No wonder I kept getting knocked out so fast lol

At least I'm not getting shaved by my own teammates though

Looks like it make no much sense for single players to take down gyms. You really need to be in a team of 6+ now to get somehow reasonable reward.

I agree it will be hard to collect coins, but you can gain stardust by feeding berries to your team mates. 500 dust is 25 berries. Overall niantics goal is to increase activity for all players and add an end game/encourage long term play.

I just wonder how bots and spoofers will impact raids since they will have the best pokemon.

Dont have a problem with higher level because they are higher (not saying you do necessarily, but its kinda the impression i get)

You put the effort in, you get more out of it.

As for your 500 dust....just go outside and catch 5 pidgeys! Thats 500 dust right there. You cant be that short can you?

I currently have over a Million Star dust, and proud of it. I worked to get that much dust...but i dont do anything crazy, just be consistent. I play in my local park daily, the spawns are not even good...but I track distance on my egg (i only incubate one at a time) but ive managed to reach lvl 33 and have some decent pokemon, with my highest being a 3200 Cp dragonite.

Just keep going, keep saving dust, and keep hatching

Yes, catching lots of mons is the best way to collect dust. (hatching eggs also helps).
I can catch 1 mon a lot faster then feed 5 berries in a gym.

I thought the coin system was going to be lame. I racked up 4 so far. Talk about an eye roll. That being said I've got ten other defenders out there. The longest standing one is already 9 hours. I might actually get capped!
