Good Gyarados or not? Keep or Keep Looking?

I need to know if I should keep and power up this Gyarados with all the candies I have saved up or keep looking for a better one.

The two things people look for are good IV's and good move set.

My Gyarados is not perfect but it's got high (86%) IV's and the best moves it could possibly have.

See below picture for the 2 combinations of IV's. Basically [15/15/9] is what I'm hoping for but 15/14/10 is basically the same thing a little less cp for a bit more hp.

I wish it's stamina was higher because I feel that's the most important stat directly giving more hitpoints which matters as a gym defender. It won't have the max hit points at cap.

It could though potentially reach the max CP for any Gyarados. 2688 #12th best among all pokemon.

It's moves are Dragon Breath and Hydro Pump. I'm happy that it's got Hydro Pump. 28DPS by far the best move of the three, plus it's STAB enabled.
As for Quick Move Dragon Breath vs Bite, the DB is good when you put it into perspective.

As the strongest non-dragon type pokemon that can use dragon breath, Gyarados is very useful against those damn Dragonites. Dragon Breath being a Dragon type attack is a super strong attack vs a dragon/flying type Pokemon like a Dragonite and since Dragonite is literally like the most powerful gym defender possible you still need a relatively strong pokemon to attack it effectively and Gyarados is still fairly high up on the list of powerful pokemon. Yes I can use any high cp Pokemon and take down Dragonite but why not a high cp one with a super effective move that's perfect for taking them down faster.

Yes the Bite move, the other move it could've had, has type advantage against Psychics and Ghosts because it's Dark type which makes it more useful vs more potential pokemon while dragon breath only has type advantage against dragon types. I feel though Dragonite is harder to kill then those Psychic/Ghost few.

Should I power this bad boy up?

It's lower/mid tier Stamina/HP might delegate it to being an attacker only instead of a decent gym defender but if I did put it on a Gym it's only weakness is to Rock and Electric type. Resistant to all them Water pokemon people are using frequently. Plus soon it will be CP2000+ when most Pokemon are around 1600-1800. Meaning when I put it in a Gym it will help keep it higher on the Gym's list and allow it to stay in them longer for the free coin collecting.

Right now though it is fairly low in level currently at only cp870 with Power Up dust 1300 2 candy so I will not have enough stardust unless I dump my entire stash (83,000) I've been saving up to raise it's level.

I can find Gyarados fairly easy, I don't need 400 candy to get one, so it's not going to be hard to find another one but I think it'll be hard to find one with better IV's even though this isn't perfect.

EDIT: It's got 15/14/10 IV's. I powered it up a few more times.

This means it won't have max CP at cap. But as you can see it's only a small minimal difference like 20 HP. Right now it's got 946 CP and it's max would've been 960 so 14 point difference...

If you are under level 30 you don't need to hurry to power it up. I'd wait until level 30 and only then start spending stardust. If that is the best you've got when you are level 30, go ahead and power it up. That is because wild Pokémon cap at level 30 so you are then likely to have to spend less dust to achieve same level Pokémon. The end game is currently a crazy farm for stardust so anything you can save you should. That being said, it's a nice Gyarados, congrats :)

Don't fuss over the stamina if. The difference between yours and a perfect one is 4hp at the level cap. Not even a quick attack worth of damage.
