Guys,
My main Gyarados is 91% and have Bite/Dragon Pulse. I always wanted one with HydroPump but the others 2 that I evolved came with Twister.
Thing is, it's been a while since I don't level this Gyarados up, since I didn't find it useful lately. After this update its around 2400cp... and it could be around 2700cp if I power it up to max.
Thing is, I want to max it out now that he is an attacking beast, but the fact he has Dragon Pulse instead of HydroP bothers me.
On the other side, I have about 120 magi candies, and I don't want to start looking for 250+ candies again, then find a 90+ Magikarp and then having 1/3 chance of finally getting HydroP.
What do you guys think of DP Dragonites ? I know they are really good against Dragonites (which is totally awesome), but what about using this attack as a general attacker ?
Does it worth it or should I start looking for the HydroP one ?

Power it. Hydro pump isn't that much better power wise, dragon pulse is a lot more versatile. Even after changes I doubt many fire/rock/ground will be in gyms. You could even use DP gyarados against water types take .8 dam from their attacks.
Also better on defense if you plan on that.
Water attacks are a dime a dozen. Dragon moves are rare. Plus you know you'll get twister or pump if you try again:)
The problem with this Logic, is that it doesn't work in Pokemon Go.
Same Type Bonus completely cancels Not Effective Bonus
So a HydroPump Gyrados will still do more damage against a Vaperon than a DragonPulse Gyrados.
I always thought SuperEffective/NotEffective should get a small boost to make it better than Stab/NoStab

Overall B/DP Gyrados is a horrible attacker. If your unsure you should try it out at a gym and see for yourself. Gyrados is the 4th highest CP available mon now so a viable gym defender but its the weakest of all the top 10 high CP mons maybe of the top 20 largely due to the jolteon buff. Dp is better than HP on defense. Depending on your situation it could be a useful but imo a Ryhdon is a better option if your looking for a high CP mon to place in gyms.
A gyarados with B/HP however is a very useful all round attacker. I think a its a must have for any high level player as Bite will be great against all the new Psychic types.
I for one am not gonna power up anything till after the stardust event finishes and all the dust settles. I think in a week we will know exactly how all these changes will play out in the real world and in your particular area.
After evolving and powering up another Arcanine and Eggy this week for 150K stardust the burn of this update hurts a lot. What Ive learned is you can power up later.
Hydro is better damage wise. It will be very useful for a short time while people put rhydons in gyms. Then they will learn to use them as attackers. A hydro pump gyarados is a wannabe vaporeon without STAB quick move.
On the other hand dragonites will always be in gyms. He already has a DP. He has a very low chance of getting a hydro pump thats arguably better after grinding for a ton of candy. Just saying...I got two twisters and 5 bulldoze in a row. Beware!
Definitely. I have 3 Gyarados, two with Dragon Pulse and one with HydroPump. I love them all in both defense and offense. They are my highest CP mons. One with perfect IV, one is 94% and the other is 88%.
Dragon Pulse is super fast and in many situations it is better than HydroPump. Take an example. When you are against a mons with Hydropump, after you charge up Hydropump, to be safe, you better wait for the enemy to release HydroPump first and then dodge and hydropump. But with Dragon Pulse, you can hit with the first one and then wait until the enemy's hydropump. After the hydropump, you have two Dragon Pulse charged up and ready to use. You have 0 waste of time comparing with HydroPump. Another benefit is that since you can hit first, the enemy may not have time to hit you back with charge move before it dies.
Another case is that when the enemy has 1/5 of life remaining, if you have hydropump charged up, you may want to save it for the next mons but then you may risk that you fail to dodge the enemy's charge move. However, with dragon pulse, you can release one and kill immediately while having another one saved up for the next mons.
Overall, although hydropump is more powerful, dragon pulse is more flexible and can have more strategies to counter waste and risk.
If you have one or two partners to go with you for attacking, Dragon Pulse is even better. Hit first always has its benefit, in real life or in game:-)
