And ironically, DB/Pump and Bite/Pump are both ranked B like DT/Crunch.
Those 2 movesets should seriously be ranked F, my level 33 TS/TB Jolteon can go through 3 straight level 35 Gyaradoses with those movesets WITHOUT DODGING, and they don't even fire a hydropump!
While my same Jolteon can't take down 2 DT/Crunch Gyaradoses.
Dragon Tail/Crunch underrated for Gyarados defence?
Crunch does 3*70 damage, is just as hard to dodge as Hydro Pump, and hits 3 times more often as Pump. It will also hit at least twice in a battle unless there are many attackers, while Hydro Pump may not be used at all if the attacker has a powerful Jolteon. Yet it is not listed as an optimal moveset in the Defenders' Tier List.
Does anyone else think that DT/Crunch should be ranked A like DT/Pump? Maybe FuNKyShO should make a video on this.

I think DT/HP is best since Jolteon, Gyarados best attacker will get dodge bugged against HP, but not against Crunch...As long as Jolteon can tank a Crunch, you should not be knocked out...
HP, on the other hand, dodge bugs me all the time...Most Jolteon users are probably dodging all the Dragon Tails anyways so dodging Crunch is not hard if you are dodging all...
Assuming the dodge bug will be fixed with this gym update, what move do you think is best? I don't think it is fair to ranked defensive movesets based on a bug. Besides that, as others have mentioned, A good Jolteon can take out Gary before hp even goes off, at least if you aren't dodging all. And even though crunch may not KO Jolteon, it puts you into panic mode and you do have to start dodging because the dt will finish you off.
It may not be fair to rate moved based off a bug but it is very real. Its still a loss when you go into a semi-invisible death state and can't launch a charge despite having about 20% of your health left. Its not really worth switching out either because you likely won't have the time to build up another charge before fainting. Cheap, yes. Fair, no. Realistic, unfortunately very much so.
Ever since the first time I battled a dt/c Gyarados, I have felt like that is the best defensive moveset by far. That moveset actually makes me turn away from using Jolteon, just because of the power of dt. Even if crunch doesn't finish him off, he will be worthless to face another Gyarados, which makes him a 1 pokemon attacker. It made me use tankier options like Golem...oddly enough, hp then becomes the better defensive move because Golem will not survive one of those...
It's probably the best Gyarados defence on average, but I think it is the only gyarados (along with twister, maybe dragon pulse too), that guarantees a Jolteon win without dodging (that means taking a crunch without dodging too)
People talk about how they can go through an HP gyarados before it firing HP, but in reality they are just lucky because there's a 50% chance of firing a move once there is sufficient energy.
With crunch/twister/dragon pulse you are guaranteed a win with 0 dodging. Outrage/Hydro pump, you will win without dodging most of the time but without 100% certainty.
This is my experience as well...People claim they can always clear it before HP fires, but I see HP come out since they will normally have enough energy before you can finish it off...esp 3000+ Garys since 2 Thunderbolts won't finish it once it's charged...
That said, another method I use is just a 50% Jolteon...Charge up 100% energy, dodge all DT, and fire both Thunderbolts in a roll...If HP comes out, just eat it and use backup if needed...no dodge bug and just 1 revive to take out a future Gary.
Since I have more revives than potions, I fight with 50% health a lot now (that, and I'm hoarding potions too).
Are we only considering thunder bolt? I only use discharge Jolteons. I save up all 3 charges and release them back to back to back. By not firing them as soon as you get them, Gyarados is not building that energy from the damage taken, instead, all that damage is taken at once and takes him out before he can fire hp.
Maybe Discharge is better to avoid HP firing, but I don't have a good one I want to power up so for me, even with the dodge bug, I just swap to Golem...
If my Jolteon started at full health and the dodge bug hits, I notice my Jolteon would be around half health so he can go again next round without healing and I just let it faint the next time.
If dodge bug wasn't there, then Jolteon can certainly clear 3 Gyarados, esp Bite ones.
Another point which is important in my opinion/thought is that I don't attack stagnant level 10 rival towers so I rarely have to clear 10 mons...I mostly just keep my local gyms low/cleared so I don't tend to need/use all 6 attackers actually so if Jolteon clears 1 Gary, good enough for me...This is also why I use Lapras all the time since I rarely need to go through 7+ mons to get an all clear bonus.
If you attack level 10 stagnant towers all the time, then I can see using more bulky generalists and leave Lapras and Jolteon at home...
I was evolving level 30 Eevees and got 2 Jolteons with discharge, so I rolled with them, especially because they do more total damage. No power up required for those guys.
I usually only attack level 10 gyms. I'm not taking down gyms so I can collect some coins, I have my max number of gyms, I am doing it so the other team has to build their towers back up.
Of course every gym is different. I have come across gyms that have 5 or 6 Gyarados in them. As I knock the gyms down, I will use a Jolteon to speed it up at the end, but early on I actually just stick to using my Blisseys. I'll also use my SE Rhydon if there isn't multiple Snorlax.
But yeah, long story short...bite Garys are garbage, and dt/crunch are certainly the most annoying for me. HP is only the best if I am using Golem or Rhydon.
Yeah, I think we've had this discussion before with our Potion drop debate...
I'm too lazy, in a rush, time crunched to even bother with my P/HB Blissey to attack and I never attack rival Levl 10 towers (tried before, but gets back to 7+ within 8 hours) so yeah, it's rare for me to even attack a level 7 gym since I tear them down before they get that big.
If anything, that's more demoralizing to the rival team since they all drive to the gym and I walk < 5 minutes and they keep seeing they got kicked out less than 21 hours and wasted time/potions/gas/etc...After a while, they never build up anymore.
This is why, in a way, I am ruining the game for all these other people who just wants to make a gym theirs...(when I actually want no one to own the gym so we can all get coins/dust).
I have 2 level 35.5 Jolteons:
1. CP = 2504, Attack = 15, Thunder Shock + Thunderbolt
2. CP = 2494, Attack = 10, Thunder Shock + Thunder
With Thunderbolt as a 2-bar move, no. 1 Jolteon can easily take down a Gyarados without it firing a 1-bar Hydro Pump.
I wait until both bars are full, then fire both and watch carefully for a yellow flash before firing a third. The third will take down Gyarados up to about 3200 CP and if you don't hesitate with firing the Thunderbolts, the Gyarados will not fire a Hydro Pump - even allowing for the dodge bug / lag.
No. 2 Jolteon has a 1-bar Thunder charge move, which requires a different strategy and requires dodging of all Gyarados charge moves as generally 2 full charge moves are required to take down the Gyarados.
That is my experience anyway.
