Is Pokémon go getting boring

In the past month, I haven't played much Pokémon go at all. Before then, I played constantly. Is it just me, or has Pokémon go become really boring and stale? I just see the same common Pokémon all the time and get bored with battling gyms.

Anyone else feel this way?

Try to set goals, a few of mine are to see how many mons I can keep in gyms, currently for 1 week now I have 11 in gyms and also to get the highest IV's with highest CP I can, if you have time and potions you can test different mons in battle to see what you consider to be good for you.

lol, it's been horribly boring since the Johto pokemon dropped months ago (with occasional decent events like the recent rock event). I have maybe 15 to go to fill out the US pokedex, of which:

Mareep/Flaafy/Ampharos - never seen, except maybe once on the tracker
Politoed - every item seems to drop for me except King's Rock, hooray for interminable pokestop spinning. I have gotten about 15 special items and only one of those has been King's Rock (used for Slowking)
Unown - never seen
Sneasel - never seen

I am walking around looking for the last few Pineco and Swinub to get those evolutions and instead, after Adventure Week, it's just a giant sea of Pidgey, Murkrow, Ekans, and Natu. Also I still need Cleffa/Magby and it's like a death march of Staryu, Krabby, and Paras coming out of those 2km/5km eggs.

Short answer no, the game itself doesn’t really provide direction or goals, that’s on you. For example I’ll get a high IV mon and I evolve it with good moves, it then becomes a project. I want it to be at X level, to do that I need to hatch and catch for dust, catch for candies, walk for candies. This may be more of a flaw than a positive feature but you got to get yourself involved in the game not wait for it to grab your attention.

LMAO. "I admit that this game is incredibly repetitive drudgery but it's YOUR fault for not getting sufficiently enthused by its minutia!"

Well if you want a game to tell you what to do and when then this game isn’t for you. Besides it’s not like Niantic invented grinding.

There's no evidence from OP's post that his complaint is that the game is too open-ended. "This game is boring and stale" =/= "I want a game telling me what to do."

Niantic didn't invent grinding, but they might have the dubious honor of perfecting it.

Read to me like the game would not be as boring to the OP if the game provided interactions and feedback to the player, like in game objectives.

I am not sure how you arrived at that interpretation from the OP's post:

"Is it just me, or has Pokémon go become really boring and stale? I just see the same common Pokémon all the time and get bored with battling gyms."

The OP's complaints are that: 1) Pokemon in his area are too concentrated in a few species; 2) the gyms are boring (if he and I are anything alike, he's tired of just mashing and dodging again and again for relatively little reward).

It seems like you've projected your own objectives for the game onto the OP: you've assumed he's bored because he needs to set himself more goals (as you do), and he's getting frustrated because the game isn't giving him those goals. But I suspect that the OP is like the vast majority of players, who are just not interested in things like making sure he has the perfect set of mons for prestiging (if he finds battling boring already, why would this help?) or getting that perfect IV Blastoise (most players are happy just getting one, and then moving on to try to catch the rest of their Pokedex -
which is incredibly tedious given that there are 20-30 mons that practically never spawn, amid 50 or so that are everywhere).

Right now I have a few objectives - my primary objective is to fill my Pokedex:

1) Walk Chansey - I need almost 200km to get a Blissey.
2) Hatch 10km eggs until I get enough Mareep for Ampharos.
3) Hatch Magby, Cleffa, Miltank.
4) Find a Sneasel, probably after the next migration.
5) Keep spinning Pokestops until I finally get a Kings Rock for Politoed.
6) Keep an eye out for Swinub, Cyndaquil, and Pineco, which I can grab with pinap berries to speed up candy acquisition.
7) as for finding Unown: ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Just because I have set all of these objectives for myself doesn't negate the fact that achieving each one of them will be mind-numbingly boring.

To accomplish them I must do the following, delightfully varied things:

1) Walk around a butt-ton.
2) Walk around a butt-ton.
3) Walk around a butt-ton.
4) Check the Silph Road atlas for nearby sightings, and walk around a butt-ton.
5) Dump excess items when feasible so as to maximize PokeStop spins, and walk around a butt-ton.
6) Walk around a butt-ton.
7) Walk around a butt-ton + ¯_(ツ)_/¯ .

"Getting"?

I am mostly still playing as a way to force me to get out and walk more.

Same, I walked about 7km over a couple of hours last week and it felt really good. I have finally started loading up good podcasts to focus on while I absentmindedly catch stuff.

This and it's a way to bond with my 6 year old nephew. I love when we along with my brother-in-law play. Outside that, I take my Plus with me and mash a button 99% of the time.

I'm sticking it out for the gym re-work and if it underwhelms (most likely), I'll probably spend all my 900K stardust and take a break until Gen 3.

I think it depends on why you are playing. There are certainly a multitude of better games out there for the computer and gaming machines. But this is a game for the outdoors. Especially for entertainment while walking. It make my walks more fun. And even my runs. And that has not worn off with time.

My answer to the original question is Yes. Level 37 here, enough coins and gyms, full dex save for regionals.

Thinking of getting a Go+ and making a new character to play exclusively using that, ie a purely Go+ account. Would be an interesting project to see how far one can get with single throw regular pokeball game.

Yes, at least during the week when Netflix just releases House of Cards.

The game didnt become boring it actually became less boring over the course of the year. u just got bored with the game. Completely different things.

The only senses in which it became less boring (at least, after everyone got the Nearby tracker) was that Niantic added 85 or so Johto pokemon into the game and added special items for a handful of evolutions. But those are both trivial from a UX perspective, because:
-about 65-70 of the Johto pokemon are not difficult to find and can be caught within a month or so;
-the special items just become another part of grinding; as the Pokemon they evolve are not particularly strong, once you have them all, most players likely see no particular need to get more than one of each.

Neither one change the basic gameplay, which is tedious as hell, especially if you care more about filling up the Pokedex than leveling up: 1) go out and catch pokemon, 90% of which are the same 20 species, 2) walk around and around to hatch eggs and slowwwwly collect buddy candy, 3) battle in gyms to earn coins. And the gym gameplay is even worse now than before thanks to Niantic being unable to effectively ban cheaters, half of whom are installing level 35+ Blisseys in every gym they spoof.

Y ur right. Well buddy system was cool too xD anyway they cant change gameplay that much since it is a mobile game afterall plus like alot of many other games it has a heavy grind and rng component to cheapely pull off lenghty progression and wide variety of outcomes over a longer time span so yes alot of people will think the game is boring but if the game didnt change that much like u said how come op is only finding the gaming boring now instead of the first couple of months where the majority of the players left after trying it out? Could it be cuz at that time he did not find the game to be boring but now does? Since the game didnt change maybe ops opinion did (wink wink ;D) aka he got bored with the game =P I guess what im trying to say is that the game is the same for everyone and when lots of people still have alot of fun playing it it comes down to each ones preference in gaming and since op played up until this point its because his opinion about the game changed. and y u could say that they could inovate a little bit here and there and I agree but im actually sympathhetic with niantic on this since its a relatively new gaming genre and boting and spoofing are huge critical problems that need to be dealt with in order to make the game better for everyone else. Aaaaaanyway to answer ops question "Is it just me, or has Pokémon go become really boring and stale?" Yep it is him sorry xD along with many other people with a perfecly normal human trait of seeking new stimulus every now and then. Sorry im in the mood to write alot o gibberish today. Im kinda bored since the weather sucks around here and I cant play pokemon go hehe

"how come op is only finding the gaming boring now instead of the first couple of months where the majority of the players left after trying it out"

We don't know when OP actually started playing (or even when his country launched the game). It's possible he started at launch or even as a beta tester, but it's also possible he's only been playing for three months and the last one was when the novelty wore off.

"boting and spoofing are huge critical problems that need to be dealt with in order to make the game better for everyone else. "

This understates the problem. The game only has three main activities: catching, walking, and gyms. Botting/spoofing is bad enough in my area to almost make one of those activities pointless. If Niantic can't get a handle on a full third of their flagship game, I'm not sure we have reason for sympathy.

"Aaaaaanyway to answer ops question "Is it just me, or has Pokémon go become really boring and stale?" Yep it is him sorry xD along with many other people with a perfecly normal human trait of seeking new stimulus every now and then."

This is just a truism.

"Is it just me, or does lutefisk taste horrible?"

"Well, 80% of Norwegians hate it and 99.9% of everyone else hates it. But "tastes horrible" is your perception, so it's just you, although your perception is totally normal since most humans have taste buds that freak out at the taste of lye."

Sure, "this is boring" or "lutefisk tastes horrible" are subjective claims, but that is something the OP presumably is aware of - he's not asking if people can check the results that led to his objective conclusions, he's asking if his subjective opinion is reasonable. Which it is.

he literally said so in the question that he played alot so i think it is safe to assume that he hummm played alot? xD doesnt really matter if it is in the sense of a wider timespan or just played 24/7 during a much shorter span. he considers that he played alot so he should have a good idea of what the game is like.

it doesnt underestate the problem. it is just a general idea not really unfolded or analyzed in a thorough way but its very likely that it is true. the non legit gameplay cripples the game in a way that developers cant focus on creating good new content that much and when they do they cant just put it on top of dangerous and alarming problems that are cleary doing damage like in ur case for example with bots and spoofers. those kinds of problems delay the timeline of events and launch of new features. we were supposed to have features by now that are still not available due to this reason. we were even supposed to have new features before the end of last year and by now we could be sitting at like 2-3 completely new features like pvp and trading and pokecenters and stuff.

yes it truism but let me try my best to explain why i feel it needs some attention.
unlike the pokemon main games which are alot more rpg than pogo, pogo is a collection game above everything else. people often try it without having this in mind. the core of any collection game is that a u have a collection and u will be receiving pieces of that collection over time. at first people try pogo for lots of different reasons and will stick around a little bit because in collection games progression is really fast at the start and provides enough new content but then gradually becomes slower. imagine u were starting some sticker collections. ur first packs would have no duplicates almost every time but gradually u will be getting duplicates more often. then u reach a state when u still stumble upon a certain collection sample that is still new once in a while and it still is enough for u to stick around but eventually ull hit a treshold where u will only be getting duplicates. that makes things boring and hard to complete without any real rewards during long periods of time. thats why u need to be setting ur goals accordingly and focusing on projects of ur own. while stickers or cards suck at that most of the time pogo is actually better in this area in comparision. its a f2p game. the samples of the collection are outside spread out in different location. the same sample will almost never be the same since u have IVs and movesets so u can keep on improving what u already have. they are distributed in distinct patterns like biomes or nest or frequent spawn point further encoraging travelling. u can focus on particular samples with the buddy system or u can get random ones u wouldnt otherwise get in ur location, u can use ur own samples to help further expand and strengthen ur collection by going to gyms and gathering coins for various utility items. i think u get the point which is u actually have different features for different approaches on how to collect pokemon unlike the standart "pay x get a booster pack with x randomly selected samples". thing is being a collection game like other few u will never fully collect everything (every mon with 100IVs with every possible move combo and all maxed ou xD) u either create ur own entertainment inside the game with personal projects or goals or u just take joy on the very act of collecting or u stop playing if u think the game is not giving u enough fun. the game will be there no matter what and u can stay or take a break or leave or comeback but its essecially all on u knowing what type of game u want to play. every personal preferences on games are reasonable aswell as eventually getting tired of the same game but i think it is worth to know why many people feel a little disapointed with pogo after playing for a while.

a little note i think is worth mentioning is to be careful with gyms. people will often prioritize the gym mechanic as their main or even only incentive to play. while this is completely fine keep in mind pogo is nowhere near a hardcore complex game. gyms have a cute little meta and a diversity with potential due to pokemon having weak and strong points but that is at most a below average competitive feature due to simplicity and a handfull of obvious flaws thus letting down alot of people

No I am still loving the game mainly because of this app as you have probably noticed I am on here all the time. Also I recently found a gym like 30 minutes away (walking) and my favorite part of this game is the gym part that is why I want the gym rework way more than anything else. But yeah as far as catching good pokemon it is super boring haven't seen a snorlax since a few months before gen 2 also just recently I caught my first ever Dratini after almost a whole year... the spawns need to get better, The gym rework needs to come, and most of all the egg level cap needs to be increased to atleast 25.

Not at all, after 7 months (late start) I still love the game as much (or more) than ever. I guess it depends on what you're getting out of it.

For me, it's the ultimate exercise app. I have always loved nature, and walking/hiking/biking, but opportunities have been limited. As a woman, I can't just go off into the woods by myself without concerns about safety; walking in circles in a (safe) park has always seemed incredibly boring to me. So I didn't exercise nearly enough.

Now, all of a sudden, walking in circles in a park (with 10 pokestops on a 1 km trail) is a lot of fun and I do it all the time. I am slowly - but surely - losing some weight I really needed to and exercise every day (even on my work days - I go for a 1 mile walk at lunch). Catching mons also improves my mood (haha, must be an ancient hunting instinct we all have) and I enjoy battling/prestiging gyms.

So what's not to like? But that's me, and everyone has their own reasons for playing.

Maybe take a break from the game, and it may become interesting again after a while.

Aside from the 7 pokemon I have left (not counting regionals) there isn't really much more motivation for me to play. I have decent pokemon with move sets i'm fine with, I haven't battled gyms at all since around august/sept. since I do not like battling in this game at all (hoping whatever gym rework changes that), and I don't know what else to do after i'm done with the remaining pokemon I have left but to wait for the next update, legendaries or whenever they decide to drop gen3 which I hope is around summer because gen2 pokemon is not enough to last all summer and the same sentiment goes for legendaries which I expect they will only introduce the 3 birds first.

Waiting for improvements in the unfinished game is indeed boring. But that doesn't matter when you just hop on a random bus and go where it takes you and wander there.
