Does the Umbreon/Espeon evolution procedure work with just 2 candies during the rock event?

I have a large number of Vapereon, Flareon and Jolteons, but only one Espeon and one Umbreon, so I thought I would use the Adventure Week to evolve a second one of each. My understanding was that I had to make my chosen Eevee my buddy, walk it until I gathered two candies and then evolve it at night for Umbreon or during the day to Espeon while it is still my buddy. So I made an Eevee my buddy, walked it until I got two candies tonight (only 1.25 km x 2 during the event) and then, after confirmation of the award of the second candy, evolved it and got - a Vaporeon. Now it is a nice Vaporeon, but not the Umbreon I wanted. So maybe the evolution trick does not require obtain 2 candies, but rather 2 candies with 5 km of walking for each, not some easy/sleazy 1.25 km x 2 during an event. Has anybody else tried the Eevee evolution to Umbreon/Espeon during the event? If so, what were your results?

must be 10km and two candies

That is the obvious conclusion, unless I messed up. Have you actually tried it during the Adventure Week event?

there were posts earlier of it failing after 2 candy but not 10km. so i think the requirement is 10km in the code not the candy.

Obviously there must be both the candy and the distabne. Some people failed evolving Espeon/Umbreon after walking >10 km. Which happens when you swicht the buddy before claiming the candy.

when they code it though I doubt that given that usually 10km = 2 candies that they have
IF distance = 10km
AND IF candies gained = 2
AND Time = X

esp considering I doubt they would even track candies gained and we know that they track distance walked with buddy. So the code is probably just has
if distance = 10km

because the second line would usually be redundant.

And all the failures i know of are when people walked it 10km then unbuddied before evolving. I don't know of any that walked 7.5 unbudied, rebuddied and walked say 3 km and evolved.

(I don't feel like wasting 10km to try it out though)

If you are going to experiment with something like this, then use Eevees with less desirable IVs until you know whether or not it works. Otherwise I'd just wait until after the event for the known evolution method.
