Arcanine with Snarl + WC as a viable defender?

I haven't seen many people talk about this moveset with Arcanine. With the new update coming to limit 1 of each mon species per gym, he seems like a great one to throw in. My 91% 2620cp was almost able to one hit a maxed out Gyrados with wild charge. Also looking at how much damage Wild Charge does, Arcanine hits with 227 and Raikou hits at 241 (within 14 damage of Raikou's best elec attack seems like a great move to have!)... I guess what my question would be is, does this make a Snarl + WC Arcanine the best cp viable fire defender?

I guess if your gyms aren't terribly competitive he might be. A Tyranitar with B/SE or a Golem with Rock moves would destroy him in short order. He would probably surprise some folks in his first go around if he connected with his special versus a water mon.

I hate it when people say this or that pokemon won't be a good defender because it has a weakness or pokemon A or B will destroy it. Fun fact, everything has a weakness. Fun fact, every pokemon can get destroyed, even Blissey gets destroyed. Blissey also gets beat pretty handedly by that Tyranitar you mentioned.

That's very true. I guess what I typed came off more harsh than I meant. As I expanded on below I think it's a good move. Not a Blissey substitute but a good move that's as good as others and tricky.

It's kind of hard to write my personal opinion while I've been forced to build an attacker army thanks to my area. In his area it may be a great mon. My intention wasn't to belittle his move. But it did read that way and I apologize for that.

Also, any moveset that is on a mon that would have possibly seen a dragon moves Dragonite that still doesn't protect from one is unlikely to be a great defender unless more changes that just the number of mons in a gym.

It will definitely surprise the most common attacker-vaporeon. However as JHVS has pointed out this has no deterrence effect on an attacking dragonite, snorlax, blissey etc, and a rock golem counters him even more if he has wild charge (compared to arcanine's other moves)

Yes he is a good defender because most people will go in blindly with a vaporeon and when wildcharge comes in it can catch them of guard and that could win a battle I am saying this from experience.

I'm probably throwing a Dragonite at him in most high end gym situations. Just saying.

Arcanine does OK though. Dragonite resists neither wild charge or snarl so it is a tougher battle than say, vaporeon.

No doubt. I'm not saying that the defensive set in question isn't his best, it probably is all things considered. I'm not saying he isn't a viable defender either. I'm just saying I was always usually taking my Dragon against him in my area. He will be marginally better the first time through the second time I'll either counter him directly or just run a Dragonite again then use his left over health for another target.

It's a good mon and a smart defensive play. But, you know, in the current system it's not much. As good as most other moves though.

it is defenently a viable defender because snarl has a high damage at 12 and it will be super efective against anyone dumb enough to use a slowbro/slowking against your Arcanine, and Wild charge is super efective against all water types and double super efective against gyrados

i have a similar situation, lvl 20 100% ivs arcanine with same moveset. i'm waiting for the possible gym rework before powering it up: if things stays as they are it will be a nice troll defender in my opinion, because a lot of players will try to hit him with vaporeon&co, and wild charge is a nasty move against them. also, it is an high cp pokemon, which is a plus for a defender

The only down side is that wild charge is not very effective against ground, and ground is super effective against fire
