Need for new gym strategy?
Hi guys,
I read a lot of strage theories how to change the common gym system. I dont know if I am the only person here who think WHY?
I can understand if newbies feel some kind of discriminated because they cant participate in gym fights like they want to. You cant expect participating alone after two weeks of playing this game.
Me myself I started gym fights at level 23, because there was absolutely no reason for me to start it earlier. You need good pokemon for gym fights therefore you need a higher trainer level. And all the people here was spending a lot of time to get better. But there are still chances for low level trainers to participate and this is my advise.
Gather around with your friends or other players of the same team you are in. I teamed up with many people (from level 15 to 30+). All of us having much fun taking arenas down and pushing them afterwards. And even the low level trainers can easily participate and are much helpfull while pushing the arena.
My yellow team is also collaborating with a blue team. Instead of being our enemy they are our alliance. They dont attack our gyms nor we are attacking theirs. Further more they help us to make some free space in level 10 gyms.
I dont think that we need another gym system that takes the people apart.
In my view this game is not a single player game. It is a game where people have to come together and I think this is the precious value that this game has to offer. So go out and make some friends. You will not regret it.
The new update brought back a lot of movement to the gyms btw. . The color of the gyms are changing more often and this is good to push your asses outside on the street and have some fun with your buddies ;)

I'm sure that's fun on campuses and big town and for people with social lives or live in an area that is warm right now.
The gym system was simply better before, I'm not going to level a gym for half an hour for 1 spot when the whole gym can be taken down in the same time or my spot stolen before I can open the menu.
The update just sucks, my town is still one color(mine) now it just takes a shitload of time and heals to prestige.
There was one or two red and yellow lvl 10s that were left alone. Those poor guys don't stand a chance now after the update. I haven't seen them past lvl 3
Thanks for your answer redeyejedy.
0°C yesterday was a little uncomfortable i must admit. And I agree that getting half of the prestige for pushing is soooo annoying^^.
Social live is not really neccessary. I started playing this game on my own (none of my good friends are playing this game). I met these new people just by playing. My group also includes people from villiges so these people has also a chance to get alot of coins.
Do you think we need a new gym system? (i dont mean cosmetic changes like more or less prestige)
Yes. I thought the whole gym system was temporary when it came out. It's far too simple relying on cp for spots and tapping the screen to attack.
I thought it would be turn based. Figured blue teams would fight eachother for blue spots etc and teams would share gyms. Sounds weird, but that's what I thought. When I first fought at a gym I thought "wtf is this? I just tap and I win?" "Why can't other colors use the gym at the same time?"
I feel the whole gym system has to be completely redone...The old system was bad because it wasn't hard to take down a lvl 10, it just wasn't worth the time...
Rewards attacking were bad so most lvl 10s were just left alone.
They probably need to do something where hundreds or thousands of people have to go to the gym daily and do something for some amount of time to strengthen it so it has say, 5000000 prestige or some other insane number since ultimately, any lvl 10 can be tore down even BEFORE the update in 30 minutes...
In the end, this is a mobile game...I think like some massively multi game like Eve where you had thousands of people in battle and ships took what thousands of real life dollars to build, it's unrealistic to expect Niantic to ever make a mobile game that in-depth or complex or maybe any company to do that. It's still a mobile game.
As great as the system was before, people just didn't attacked level 10s so I could see if they got coins for doing it (attacking), no gyms would be left standing either...so the system was broken to begin with.
For a mobile game, this seems hard to do. One thing I like about the cartoon is you have trainers just using random 'weak' pokemon and winning the tournaments because their bond/whatever was better with their trainer, etc......Like Ash's Pikachu must be lvl 40+ or whatever...
In this game and I'd assume the other video games, some guy's Lvl 25 Snorlax with 90% IV with the same moves is pretty much exactly the same as some other dudes Snorlax with the same moves.
They are all generic mons and the same as strong.
Ultimately, maybe I/we expect too much from this mobile game I'm thinking when it's really a simple game in terms of the combat/gym battling etc...2 moves, dodge, attack...no real strategy...At least in the card games, various cards had some strange effects or synergies with other cards making many more things possible/useful.
Thanks for your qualified answers.
That makes me think about the sense of gyms. What should be the sense? I just thought that it is just for the battle vs other colors. With the nice side effect of collecting coins.
But you are absolutely right with your statements that it can be more then just color battles. Therefore it's hard to find out what every player wishes or what players have in mind when it comes to "ranked fights".
But the fact haven't changed that I like this system, because everybody can participate while having fun with his friends.
As I see it, they are still working on the gym system, it is trial-and-error and it is hard to get the right balance and to please everyone.
As mentioned earlier the concept of having "Team Rocket" occasionally take over a level 10 gym would be a good addition.
And possibly a challenge mode variant of gym battle where a single attacking Pokemon could take on a single defender, if they defeat that defender that causes an accelerated loss of prestige.
(Lowing the CP of the defender for lower level players).
With some changes like this they could possibly revert to the old training balance.
I would make it easier to train gyms up to level 10, but also make them easier to take down ....
I don't want to see a return to static level 10 gyms, where we are located the current balance is working well. Not static but a strong Mon can still last weeks in a gym.
That is the other problem, players are at different levels and the game plays differently in different locations..... again that is why it is hard to build the right rules.
I am happy of them to keep experimenting and for fans to keep providing feedback, but I don't expect a variant that will keep everyone happy anytime soon.
The thing that would best make the gym system accessible to newbies has nothing to do with gyms directly. The developers need to implement trading, including trading for pokemon for candy. I have some quality mon, of a CP inaccessible to newbies, that I would let go for certain candies.
That said, the new update went a little far. It is now almost impossible to hold a gym. I'd like to see Niantic split the difference between the new and old prestige calcs.
