Whatever, I'll take it. Is this ok for an evolve? The Gary will turn up with 2552 CP at level 30, hardly ideal for showing off (my other ones are all 276X+ for level 30) but since I'm involving 0 stardust for this it seems like 'good enough' for me. What do you think?

We would need to have a t-statistic of greater than 1.645 (95% confidence interval, 1 tailed) for you to prove this hypothesis that a Shiny has greater max CP than a non shiny.
Actually, not 'a lot' (actually not even enough to evolve this straight away, I'm at 265), but if I choose to take a detour to college I can usually get 8 karps a day en route and back, so with pinap berries that's 56 candy a day if I try.
That 265 candy can also feed into my existing gyarados (5 at level 30 and 1 maxed) but I'm still holding out levelling them past level 30 for the gym rework (except my 100IV)
So yeah my decision is whether just to save the candy for power ups to evolve this golden fish

Gym turnover is insanely quick in my experience so having lower max CP wouldn't matter that much when gyms barely last 10 minutes regardless of what is put in, even 3 Blisseys.
From what I've seen, gyms outside of cities that don't turnover were usually level 8+ with lowest CP being ~3200 so even a perfect Gyarados would struggle to get in those anyway. At least a red one you can show off for 10 minutes, if that.
