evolving first dragon

Hello everyone
I need advice about evolving dratini or dragonair into dragonite
dratini: 15attack 11def 14hp 89Iv 480cp 20lv
dragonair: 12attack 10def 9hp 69iv 1261cp 29LV
with 157 im not sure which one is better. i think i would like him to use as attacker but with drarini i wont have so much candy for powering up. im playing since begining and im 33 level so they are quite rare in place i play. thanks for help in advance

What is the general CP cutoff for collecting in your area?

hmm hard to say but for dragons this dragonair is the highest i got but in all my play i found only 16 dragons and in this 5 on summer vacation i think;) so not much chance for wild good one

I mean, the Dragonaire is going to evolve into a 2800ish Dragonite. With a small further investment he will be above 2900 I think. If you get an offensive one this will be great. With a defensive one you have to ask yourself if that CP will allow you to be competitive. Also if Dratini are that hard for you to come by it could be a long time before that Dratini evo reaches a truly good CP.

Good luck and let us know what you get

If you need instant ready-to-use dragonite, evolve 29lvl dragonair. If your brains are not satisfied for "low"( which it isn't) iv and you're looking high cp defender, evolve 20lvl dratini.

Is it worth an extra 85 candies (some of which you don't have yet) to go with the higher iv? Unless you absolutely need 3000+ in your local gym meta, save you candies. If you happen to get an attack move set, like you want, iv won't matter anyway.

I would evolve the lv 20 89 IV dratini. Perfect attack IV will give it high CP and it will be something to invest in going forward for attacking or defending.

But it's up to you since it's your first, if you want a high lv for gym sitting or high IV to invest in over time. I would go with the IV advantage. My gf has her 100% Dragonair that'll be her first dragon when she gets a few more candy.

By his math it would take him about 5 more months just to get that lv20 to the same CP as what he has.

It might not be as bad since Dratini's are common hatches in 10kms currently (According to SR research).

For my own case, I hatched 2 Dratini's over 5 months (free player) before the egg reshuffle starting from last year.

After the egg reshuffle, I've already hatched 2 Dratinis in 1 months time.

Someone just posted on SR that he hatched his recent 10km and got 5 Dratinis (and some others).

I don't think there's any doubt Dratini is more common than previously at the very least.

I understand that and the relevant math. But even if Dratini is much more common (it is)you would be advising him to wait 2 1/2 more months if his hatches are terrific to evolve a mon with an only moderately better use for defense and zero increased use (50% chance of that) for offense? The same math calls this bad advice. Period. There are maybe 1% of all gym scenarios where this advise is correct.

hmm for now im more into dragonair as for attacking with good moves iv wont matter and it will be 100 candie so i will have 57 left so i can always collect again for that dratini and maybe get even better one and candies with it. im also at walking 10km egg so maybe i will get another dratini. but thanks for answer and still wait for maybe more help. and about cp in gyms its around 3k highest at gyms usually every pokemon around 2600

Its good to hear I wasn't the only one with having trouble with getting a Dragonite and being 33lvl. I finally evolved my Dragonair 1009 CP (that I had since Fall - IV80) today, and got a 2539 CP Dragonite (3 power-ups) with Dragon Tail/Hurricane. So I'm happy even after the long wait.
