Great news: I figured out why a lot of spoofers are disappearing all over the world over the past 3-4 days

There have been a few threads on here the past few days about large numbers of level 10 gyms getting wiped out and not replenished by the usual spoofers. I thought nothing of it until I went home yesterday and noticed the same thing: all the gyms that were dominated by spoofers were taken down. Also, I was able to hold my spot in a gym for more than 2 hours (amazing I know). So I did a little research and found this: the latest Android update (7.0) does not allow GPS spoofing. I am a droid user and downloaded it last night and have noticed that it takes significantly longer for my screen to go from battery saver to regular (when you turn the phone from upside down to normal) while using PoGo but nothing too drastic. But apparently, it was Android and not Niantic that made this change to ban GPS spoofing. I have seen hundreds of theories on this site over the past few months that I have been a member, and this solution is just too simple: it is the operating system that disallows GPS spoofing, not the app itself. This would explain why some, but not all GPS spoofing has declined. Surely, they will find a way around this, but at least this stops the average user without a jailbroken phone just using a Play Store app to spoof from cheating. I am very happy about this, and think Apple should do the same.

It might help to some extent. The update has been out for quite a while now and I noticed a decrease in the beginning as well. However, not big enough to make a significant difference anymore.

I am waiting for the day when spoofing finally gets banned! Will take down everyone of the spoof gyms and laugh all day long. Oh to play on a level field. BTW that day will never come!

I sneak into forums every now and then to see what spoofers are doing and the Android update seems to have killed the most popular route. Only way to work around is to not update from what I've seen.

Side note: I had my Jedi / Sith teetering moment when I first looked into spoofing as a potential means to catch region exclusive but it would have taken the fun out of it. I walk/jog/run as much as I can when I play so as much as I wanted stuff like Heracross I couldn't eliminate that real world excersion. Wouldn't mean anything to have without earning.

That only stops someone if they update their phone.

Isn't it just the high end flagship phones that have this update? Pixel, Z, S8?

I have a Galaxy S6 and just downloaded it last night. I guess it was a flagship phone over a year ago but they are already on to the S8 at this point.

1. android - google buy this android from the android maker(forgot the name of company)
2.Pokemon Go and niantic -Google,pokemon company japan and (i forgot the third 1) is the biggest of the shareholder and investor pokemon go

Yeah wish google and niantic would really team up to stop spoofing. Like with this update google released, make it a forced update. And niantic do like with their updates, to continue playing you must update your OS.
Also be really nice if google would make any app/software for gps spoofing to REQUIRE rooting your phone, so then it's not able to play pokemon go at that point

So I guess that this means that the affected spoofers cannot spoof their gps position anymore. However, they are not banned and can still play PoGo as per the rest of us - thereby keeping all their ill-gotten gains to date.

Actually it's not that it doesn't allow spoofing, just that there was a bug that allowed spoofing apps to hide the fact that the locatios is spofed, this was fixed by a security update that's available for both Android 6 and 7, but the update is completely optional, what's been seen in gyms is actually Niantic removing reported confirmed spoofers from those gyms, yes the update helps to mitigate the spoofing problem on noobs, but what you crediting google it's actually the result of niantic's work.

"and think Apple should do the same."

From what I can tell, spoofing is not easily done on iPhones (if version 10.2+). I googled to what the process is like, very onerous with running multiple programs from sketchy sources, to jailbreak and then hide that fact from the OS ... and I saw numeorus messages like "I did everything you said now my phone won't work / load PoGo at all, even after deleting and restarting apps".

I just don't think it's so easy as ppl make it out to be on this forum. Would be interested to hear if I am wrong from someone who's actually done it (from a masked email account, of course).
