Is a 89% Dratini with 11 Attack IVs good enough? (update: result posted)

So yeah, got enough for my 2nd ever Dragonite, 184 candy. And wonna do it properly.

Ive had enough for awhile now...but it seems im just not gonna get Dratini from eggs like i did when they first made it more common

(literally hatched 3 back to back, now ive not seen any for months) as the weeks have passed my hopes of simply waiting and eventually hatching a better IV one has become more and more unreasonable it seems.

So atm im just strongly considering the best I currently have.

As title says, its a 89% dratini, 11/15/14.

My only concern being is the 11 in attack a problem? Hows it effect a Dragonite on defence for example?

I do have a 91% Drarini but its 189 CP level 8 :/

So yeah, as said im currently deciding whether to go for it...or keep holding out for a hopefully good hatch.

Cheers

keep holding for a while if you feel you wont have another one for a big while, that low cp dratini is just not worth unless you are swimming in candies and dust

and attack affects most the CP than the other two, if it has 15 attack/11 defense and 14 stamina, will have more cp than 11 attack/15defense/14 stamina

The 91% has 14/12/15

I have 1mil Dust and 184 candy as mentioned

Is the 89 hatched ? Say it rolls good moves, do you have enough candies to max it? What will it's max cp be compaired to a 15 attack one? What is the damage difference? If you don't have enough candies to max then I would wait on a potential better one. If you do.. go for it!

Sorry, i missed that info out.

yeah the 89% is hatched, lvl 20.

After evolving i would have enough candy to power it to lvl 28/29 i think

Are you looking for an attacker or defender?

What is your gym scene like if defense?

Would you power up a good defensive moveset?

Either tbh, I supose I mostly would like another nite to stick in a gym and sit at the top.

so..yeah, I would power it up regardless of being an attacker or defender

It all just depends on the moves it rolls.

My gym scene is pretty competitive, they don't change hands too much but they are full of high cp mons in most cases. several 3000+ Dragonites+Tyranitars

I have 1 other dragonite, 3000 cp and I think he is actually sitting in like 7th place in the gym

TL;DR it's not worth 42 extra candies for 22 extra max CP.

I assume the 11/15/14 is from an egg so it's level 20, which means with your current candies you can power it up to level 29 where it'll have 2917 CP.

Whereas the level 8 Dratini you can take it to 23, where it'll "only" have 2328 CP.

If you're concerned about IVs, for the most part, IVs make hardly any difference in battle. Moveset is much more important.

Attack and defence IVs in most situations will only change special move damage by a couple of points, quick move damage remains the same - and that's comparing 0 to 15. The difference between 11 to 15 is probably like +/-1 damage on a special, not significant at all.

Stamina usually makes the most difference because unless you're being overkilled by a special move, HP will always make a difference - but it's still not that important besides on glass cannons such as Alakazam.

As for gym placement, maxed out to 40 if that time should ever come, you're looking at 3543 CP vs 3521 CP. That CP difference shouldn't really matter because your Dragonite still sits above everything else currently available with perfect IVs besides itself and Tyranitar, and second, who knows if you'll even be playing Pokemon Go by then.

I'd power up the lower IV Dragonite because 22 more max CP is not worth another 42 candies / 210 km.

You'll also have a stronger Pokemon to use right now if you spend all your current candies on it compared to the level 8 Dratini, so if it's being used as a defender, then that's extra coins and dust that you wouldn't have if you evolved the lower level one.

If the lower IV Dragonite should somehow become obsolete in gym defence, worst case is that it becomes part of your attacking roster, so it's not like your investment is wasted.

Well damn. I was going to post something like this after he posted his gym specifics.

Great stuff and spot on ;)

Thanks for the in depth answer,

Yes you are correct about powering the 89& one.
Its lvl 20/Hatched, so I could power it to lvl 29 with my current candy count post evolution.

I agree with what you say about the lower lvl 91% one, not worth it considering its not much better. (if it was close to 100% i would perhaps go for it)

Attack and defence IVs in most situations will only change special move damage by a couple of points, quick move damage remains the same - and that's comparing 0 to 15.

Do you have a source/link for the statement that quick move damage remains the same? I'm under the understanding that is often the case, but not always (and a one point difference in a quick move's power can be significant). I'm not at all saying you are surely wrong; I just want to know how one knows this to be true. so I can verify it myself.

189 candies is the minimum to evolve and power to level 30, so I'd wait for 1 more (pinap) catch or 1 more hatch, got any 10K's in the oven? Unless you need another high-CP defender for coins, and the predicted CP will be enough at level 29 for your gym meta... My 2 'nites both got defending moves (was really hoping for attacker), but at least consolation by powering them up above Blissey-level and getting them into a stable gym. I'm just at 84 candies toward my 3rd try so a looong way to go....

No, evolve the 91% of IV.

A low IV in the stat where the base monster is strongest is not a big problem. Dragonites already have a huge base attack, so a 11 IV is no big deal. Similarly, Blisseys have a huge base stamina, so a low stamina stat is not so bad for them.

Well guys...i decided to go for it.

Evolved the 89%.

And wanted to share the result with you!

Drum roll!

Dragon Tail - Outrage!!!

(pic below)

Safe to say i could not be happier!
Totally chuffed to bits to actually get such a good/lucky moveset roll on something as strong and rare as a Dragonite. I usually seem to be unlucky with most big evolutions.

(especially considering my only other Nite rolled SW/DC and doesn't really excel at anything specific)

And also have it be effective for both attack and defence so i can use it and have fun for both!

I hope i get just as lucky when i eventually evolve my first ever (and one of my all time favourites), Tyranitar

I have a 12/15/14 and caught at dratini at level 29.
Congrats on your moveset!
I got dt/hb and sw/hu on my recent row.

SNE4K,
I name my dratinis not by their IVs but by their future Dragonite Max CP at the theoretical level 40.
for example
Drat - 3512
Drat - 3526
Only looking at IVs can be misleading.
Calculating the potential Max CP can help determine the chosen one for evolving.

Yeah, i just temporarily name my decent evolution candidates like that, with their IVs to keep it clear what is what and what i plan to possibly evolve or compare.

Oh an using your idea, my Dragonite would be called 3521 xD

Congrats! I have evolved more than 6 Dratinis, and I still have not gotten one with DT/O!
