i was only lobbing normal balls at them when I had a full inventory and a surprising number of them stuck considering dark orange circle on so many (esp considering how many balls it often takes to catch a green circle pidgey)

Yeah, since I got the badge I only catch them if I am desperate for stardust, like a few hundred away from a power up.

I thought I read somewhere that there is a higher medal than gold in the game file? So if they release an update with a "platinum/diamond" medal, there's always that to look forward to.

Probably so but there has been a ton of stuff in the game files that never happened or was there and is now gone. Either way I do think there will be higher medals one day.
