Arcanine Questions

I just evolved a Lvl 24 Arcanine 9 ATK / 13 Def / 13 Stamina. It got Snarl and Wild Charge which is ranked as the Number 1 Defensive Moveset.

First Question: Should I power this dog up? His max CP will be 2759 (100 short of the mon's max).

And Second: Why is this moveset the Optimal Defensive moveset? Is Wild Charge that strong? I know it would catch Attacking Water mon's off guard, but is there any other reason? Thanks

I won't touch that if I were you. 1st, Arcanine isn't really a defender. A meager water Pokémon will destroy him and Vaporeons aren't really that rare. You can assume almost everyone has a decent go-to Vaporeon nowadays. Doesn't matter if you catch an enemy off guard and by surprise. It'll be demolished without much resistance. It's just gonna be a waste of stardust.

Edit:
Snarl generates more energy than Fire Fang thus allowing you to fire your charge moves more before fainting. Wild Charge is better than the rest of its charge moves when defending because of lower CD and it has higher DPS than Crunch despite Crunch being a 3 bar move.

because when somebody goes against arcanine it will probably choose a water type, and those two types ''cover that''

that is all

I don’t know if you need defenders or how much dust you have to spend, so I will answer this question in a vacuum. Personally, no I wouldn’t spend the dust on it. You will catch a few Vapes off guard but you won’t sit too high in a gym. Honestly, I hope they change up the gym mechanics so when you get a mon like this the answer is always yes! Great moveset! Because it’s a shame when you get the “best defending moveset” with a mon that is better for attacking.

Leave the dog where it
Arcanine is Attacker!

Wild Charge just has good defensive DPS. High damage and decent duration.

Crunch does slightly more damage per 100 energy used (210 vs 180) but it's duration is also much longer, so in that extra time the Arcanine would have gotten some extra quick moves to make up for that damage.

Being super effective against water is just icing on the cake.

To be honest though, even with the best defensive moveset, Arcanine is still going to get crushed by Vaporeon. Moveset ratings are only relative. Being A-rated doesn't make it a strong defender, it just means it deals more damage than the other movesets of that Pokemon.

For example having the best defending moveset on a Kakuna doesn't make it a good defender - it's still a crap defender, just with the most damaging moveset for that species.

Personally I wouldn't power it up, because with the current gym meta, Arcanine's max CP is too low to compete against the current Pokemon that are commonly seen in gyms, and even disregarding CP and only focusing on duelling ability, it's still not that good either.

Got the same moveset with 98IV lvl 20, and the same question to myself.

Correct me if I am wrong if I say Arcanine is the strongest defender under the fire-types, on top with a move that counters his most common weakness.

I know a lot of high level players who have no idea about type-advantages or dodging, and who knows what the gym-rework will bring to us! I personally hope for more STAB and SE damage bonus.

But until we know more i will wait, even if the temptation is huge.

So what if arcanine is the strongest defensive fire-type mon? Vaporeons are strong and very common, that's why fire-type mons always suck at defending gyms. Besides, putting an arcanine in a gym in my area is really a mistake, it slows down prestigers, take one slot of the gym which could have been occupied by more useful defenders, but doesn't help AT ALL when attackers come. I would rather see a pidgey in mystic gyms (I'm team mystic), it doesn't help defending the gym, but at least doesn't slow down prestigers. I completely understand that low level players also want to collect coins from gyms, but to put their useless "best" pokemon pretty much ruin the gyms with the reasons I stated above, so putting trash pokemon like pidgey is better than putting arcanine, flareon, kingler, etc on gyms. I might have sounded arrogant but in my area, most bottom floors of lvl 10 gyms (no matter of which color) are usually 2800-2900 CP mons. Do you really think wild charge from defending arcanines would hurt a bulky tanky higher max cp vaporeon? Vapes wreck your wild charge arcanines without even dodging.

I attacked a defender with these moves in a gym with my vaporeon and it got skunked. Wild charge is "super-effective" vs water!! Wild charge is an Electric attack!

LOL I don't believe you unless your vapes are lower in lvl than the arcanine and you didn't dodge its wild charge. I have tested my 2.8k CP vape against a 2.4k CP arcanine without doding its wild charge and it survived to kill the tiger. That's how weak fire-type mons are at defending.
