How exactly does the walk trick with eevee work?

I finally have a good IV eevee that I hatched and I don't want to waste it on a random evolution and get bad moves so I'd rather go for another espeon since almost all of her possible movesets are decent.
But I also dont want to mess up the trick so can someone explain please?

Walk with that eevee you want to evolve to espeon/umbreon as your buddy pokemon for 10km and evolve them during the day for espeon or night for umbreon but make sure when you evolve them that they're still your buddy pokemon

Eevee - After walking with Eevee as your buddy for 10km, evolving Eevee while it is still your buddy will turn it into Espeon during the day and Umbreon during the night*. Alternative, you can name your Eevee "Sakura" to evolve it into Espeon without making it your buddy or "Tamao" to evolve it to Umbreon. This name trick only works once.

You need to make sure you get two candies with the specific eevee as your buddy. For example, walking 6km, taking a break, then another 4km does NOT work!

Also, it needs to be your buddy at the time of evolution.

Do you mean he has to walk 10k nonstop? I don't think that is accurate. I walked my Eevee, stopped, slept and then resumed walking the next day. I got my Umbreon and Espeon that way.

Correct. Nonstop isn't necessary in my experience either. Just the 2x5k walk to get 2 candy and with the Eevee as your buddy choose night/day evolution for Espeon/Umbreon.
