I just googled "Pokemon Go" and found this under News. In summary, it is an interview with the same individual that originally said "Save your candies!" but at 10:35 they explain that it was advice for new players, in general (i.e. not hinting at an event).
With that being said, if there is an easter event (e.g. double xp) then it may be worth it to hold onto candies if one has been holding onto them purposefully since the inital "Save your candies!" was released. Who's been saving their candies?

Oh yeah I've been saving my rare candies although I already have enough to evolve two or three mons e.g. machop. I still haven't got a Machamp with C/DP even though I have enough candies to evolve 2 machops into machamps and some candies to power one of them up and yet I'm still waiting for a possible candy-related event (I really hope it would be reduced candy cost to evolve or power up).
Yep me too. I did one mass evolve last week as I was tired of it. But I've collected enough for another mass evolve plus a second evolution party that will finish off my Gen 1 and most of Gen 2 mons I don't have yet. That will be some nice EXP
If it isn't announced by Thursday I'm going all in too. Dragonite and Tyranitar here I come!
