Powering starter A/D teams
Hi all!
Hoping to go back to battling soon--was taking down neighborhood gym for daily 10 coin till it became a perma-lvl10 gym. They came in the night without warning and with very high CPs! Below my attackers and defenders and strat. Input appreciated! Also, I give my fav mons names instead of stats, so stats included on the side. Current lvl: 27.
Mon “Name” St/At/De CP % Movs
A team
Venusaur “Maurice” 12/14/9 1900 77% VW/SBomb
Arcanine “Rufus” 12/14/7 1938 73% F/FT
Exeggcutor “Ainsworth” 11/13/15 1658 86% Z/SeBo
Gyarados “Smith” 14/15/12 2092 91% B/HP
Lapras “Raiza” 10/14/15 1763 86% FB/B
Vaporeon “Locke” 15/10/12 1828 82% WG/HP
Special Circumstances
Gyarados “Gibraltar” 11/15/15 1939 91% B/HP
Slowbro “Remy” 12/13/15 1932 88% WG/P
Exeggcutor “Freud” 12/14/15 1752 91% Z/P
Raichu “Buford” 14/14/11 1561 86% S/TP
Strat: Maurice for the Vaps, and just got Ainsworth, so want to try her too. Ainsworth is a stand-in until I get a Z/SoBe. Rufus for eggies. Raiza for dragonites. Smith and Locke for Arcanines and everything else. Gibraltar and Remy if lots of water weakness. Thinking Freud could help with Snorlaxes w/o lick. Buford in case of a gyarados.
D team
Lapras “Cheryn” 11/15/14 1771 88% IS/DP
Exeggcutor “Skinner” 13/14/14 1919 91% C/SoBe
Exeggcutor “Pavlov” 15/14/10 1658 86% C/SeBo
Poliwrath “Delmer” 12/14/15 1413 91% B/IP
Venusaur “Rocky” 13/14/14 1019 91% RL/SBomb
Slowbro “Kili” 14/10/14 1439 84% C/P
Strat: Get CPs higher. There are about 6 gyms in reasonable range for me, only one really close. Pavlov, Delmer, Rocky and Kili are placeholders till I get snorlax & dragonites, high CP Vaps and C/P Eggie.
Power-up Strat: buddying and powering up the two Lapras (Lapri?). Saving dust otherwise, and perhaps by time Lapri finished, will have other elites to power up like snorlax or dragonite.
Finally, my questions:
1. What CP do I need to bring my attack team to take down lvl 10 CP 2000+ gyms, assuming moderate battling skill?
2. Do you focus on highest CP possible defenders to get higher on gym ladder or a well-rounded team to add the most appropriate/complementary mon to a gym?
3. Attackers first? Defenders? Bit of both?
Cheers!

Firstly you need to re-build your list with only the top tiers mon. Remove Pinsir, Dewgong, Kengaskhan, Clefable, Gengar, Raichu, Rhydon and Flareons (try a Arcanine). Later, take a look in all movesets and ivs and set your list again with a team of 6 attackers and 10 defenders and be sure you need them. I dont see Dragonites and Snorlaxes in your list, so you need to reserve slots in both teams (A and D). I guess the best teams for now need to have a similar structure like this:
Attackers Team:
Dragonite (with Dragon Breath);
Snorlax (with Lick/HB or BS);
Exeggutor (with ZH/Solar Beam or Psychic);
Arcanine (with Fire Blast);
Vaporeon (with Hydro Pump);
Lapras/Cloyster or some nice Ice poke to counter dragons.
Defenders Team:
Lapras (IS/B or IS/IB);
Snorlax (ZB/HB or ZB/BS);
Dragonite (SW/DP or SW/DC);
Exeggutor (can be C/SB or C/P);
Vaporeon (WG/WP);
Arcanine (with Flamethrower);
and maybe more Snorlaxes, Laprases and Dragonites cuz they're the highest CP/stats ones to sit at the top/middle of the gym.
Based on this infos, take a look in the IVs and movesets and build your teams again. Remember that you will catch and hatch a lot of poke yet. Ivs around ~80% are ok for god tier (Dragonite, Lapras and Snorlax). The others you should consider ivs ~90%+.
Answering your 3 questions:
1) I up full power all my definitive poke (D and A). The highest CP will kill faster and survive more. Just be sure to do it in definitive poke only. Some players just power till level 30, i dont.
2) Both are important. Since you stay at the middle/top of the gym, you can think about to put the most appropriate.
3) I do both.
Thanks, amazingly informative. Edited post to reflect most of what you say, including identifying "placeholders" for later snorlax and dragonite (fingers crossed). Added IV%s for clarity. Only have the 73% Arcanine for now, but perhaps will get a good one by the time lapri are powered. Will focus on getting definitive poke and save dust in the meantime.
Don't bother powering your vaporeon/flareon. You will catch high cp eevees and save you a lot of dust. I catch at least 850+cp daily at level 30.
Looks like you put a lot of thought into this team which is fantastic. Don't throw away your sub par pokemon as some suggested, they are fun to attack with just don't invest a whole lot into them. Partially power some top attackers, some fun ones, and fully power a couple of defenders since those need to be powered as high as possible.
Nope, U.S. Business trip to Brisbane with a walk from CBD through gardens, up south bank and back every day. That's how I got 900 magikarp candy to make 2 primo gyarados in a week! Was very excited when I found my first kanga. Bloody pain to catch, though. Gyms looked a little more diverse in Brisbane in Sept than they do here in U.S. now, but maybe that changed in Oct for you guys, too.
