I hear a lot of hate towards outrage for attacking and hear things such as "dragon tail is 2x what bite is"... With the recent water event I got enough Magikarp for Gyarados, which I never thought I would be able to do. My biome is very low on the Magikarp population. Anyway, I finally got enough and evolved, but got that as a moveset and immediately raised to my personal max (I am lvl 27). So far in gyms he is doing great (maybe I just have bad pokemon), pretty much outdoing my other pokemon in most battles.
Just how bad is that set? My main gym attackers usually are Rhydon, Golem, Arcanine, Piloswine, Jolteon, Allakazam, Vaporeon, Exeggutor... so maybe I just don't see it, but seems alright to me.
Not bad at all, Bite hits almost as hard as DT, and since none of them benefit from STAB, the only advantage that DT have is the SE against Dragonite and Bite charges faster, so that is no "worse" when it comes to quick attacks, just playing style.
And Outrage is not as good as HP but do SE against Dragonite, so is not bad too. You have a good mon, don't worry.
To be fair, gyarados has no machup where there's no better options, regardles of the moveset, against dragons I'd prefer a lapras or dragonite, against Psychic, I'd rather have a Tyranitar. So as long as the moveset has a high DPS, it's good for Gyarados. The one thing to note is when Mega Evolutions come (in a few years), B/C will be the prefered moveset because both moves get STAB
my 100% went bite/DP I leveled him anyway and he serves well enough against dragonite and outrage is supposed to be better then Dragon pulse.
Sometimes i think people obsess to much over what is optimal versus what job you employ something for.
(like WTF is lapras with watergun/hydropump considered a good move for)
