Can be used for both, but i prefer to use it as an attacker. This is my first 100 IV karp, although i have caught a 100 IV gyara with twister lol. So took me quite a while

Nothing compared to my perfect IV steel wing/drill run Fearow at level 1, 25CP.

Congrats! I have an Gyarados with the same moveset and iv's, was very happy I didn't get screwed over like my previous one( he got twister)

With the Gen2 move changes, Gyarados only really has 1 or 2 "bad" movesets, Bite/Crunch and Bite/Outrage -- and Bite/Outrage isn't even that bad.

Everything else will be very useful in one way or another, and we don't have to worry about Twister anymore. So, evolve away!

I have one of these, with a slightly lower IV percentage - it's great against Dragonites!

I use my dragon breath dragon pulse Dos all the time for Dnites

I don't mean to be a jerk or anything, but both of the Hydro Pump movesets are better for attacking.

DT/Outrage is probably the best moveset for defending in terms of defensive DPS, but if you're using Gyarados as an attacker, Hydro Pump is definitely optimal.

I would definitely use this guy as a defender, that's truly where he will shine.

Sure ... downvote me for trying to give the guy some advice. What a buncha salty babies around here.

The whole thread is premised on him having the "perfect moveset" for attacking. He doesn't. Not my fault.

Dude, take it easy, why so serious? Maybe someone just accidently hit the wrong button without noticing or was just reading and didnt have time to write an explaining answer.
Agree with you, but, if you wanna use Gyarados as a niche attacker against D-nite I'm quite sure, that this in fact is the best attacking moveset.

In a match up against Dragonites, could you expand on how DT+O has an edge over DT+HP? I understand that one has type-advantage, while the other has type-disadvantage but STAB. Could you provide us with some DPS numbers that would substantiate your conclusion?

Wrong. It beats blissey and snorlax faster/just as fast as DT/HP and B/HP. Just youtube "gyarados moveset". And against dragonites its obviously even better.

Incorrect, sir. Some guy's YouTube video is merely anecdotal, whereas every simulation indicates about a 5% DPS advantage for the Hydro Pump movesets.

You don't have a bad mon here, but it's not perfect as you claim. If you want to base your decisions off of a single YouTube video, by all means go for it, but if you crunch the numbers Hydro Pump is clearly superior -- not to mention the fact it allows for more effective dodging.

I've got no problem someone pointing out when I'm wrong, but I happen to be right on this one. Literally every single credible simulation and analysis agrees with me on this one.

Enjoy your slightly less than perfect mon.

Well, GP's ranking suggests the same; it is indeed the best offensive moveset. In addition, check out this link - with and w/o dodging: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVg0oON5uBQ

This is hardly scientific. And if GamePress editors really think DT/OR is better than the Pump movesets, then they're literally the only credible source who says so. GamePress isn't infallible, plenty of their rankings are up for debate -- and in this case, they're clearly wrong.

If you wanna use this guy as a Dragonite killer, go for it. But Cloyster is better and much easier to obtain. As I said before, this is the best defensive moveset, so you're better off sticking this guy in a gym.

Cheers.

Pitmound,

I agree Hydro Pump would generally hit harder against defenders with neutral typing. This is a fact.

My question is which moveset would hit harder against Dragonite and water-type Pokemon? Does DT+HP still excel in these match ups?

In those limited matchups, Outrage comes out slightly ahead. But you're typically not going to use a Gyarados against Dragonite and Vapes (there are lots of better mons to accomplish those tasks). You're going to use Gyarados against Rhydon, Golem, Tyranitar, etc. in the matchups he excels with the best Hydro Pump currently in the game.

DT/OR isn't a bad moveset, but to say it's the perfect set for attacking is just flat-out wrong.

Thanks. Earlier, I was just wondering if HP would result in more DPS despite type-disadvantage.
