[Real Best Moveset] Gyarados: The Differents Ways to be Perfect!

Good morning, afternoon or evening.

The idea of this post is to gather opinions from advanced or pre-advanced players to generate a clearer idea about Gyarados's moveset.

To begin with, we are reviewing the real advantage in a battle environment, not only taking the total DPS, also taking the dodge most attacks.

Then, the best sets of movements to evaluate are: B / HP and DT / HP.

B / HP

This moveset is ideal for battles for various reasons, for example, Bite runtime is .5, therefore dodge time is greater, giving the opportunity to give 3 safe hits and dodge easy. The coverage of attacks is slightly lower than that of DT but if we evaluate in the time the dodging will allow us to finish with greater HP, that is to say, we kill slower but we assure greater life.

DT / HP

DT in terms of DPS and EPS is the best with 13.64 DPS, in coverage also, except for the type fairy and steel. The terms of dodging takes 1.1 s, therefore, we could give a sure hit but give two hits we could receive damage.

Hp

The HP of the Gyarados is the most powerful, also its shooting time is very fast.

Conclusion:

The difference of the DPS of Bite (12) and of DT (13.64) and the advantage of the EPS means that we would defeat the enemy in less time as long as we attack statically. In battle fighting statics will not be efficient, therefore, dodging, although it takes a little more time to kill, is more beneficial, therefore BITE with HP is the best set of moves for battle.

For defending a gym the best move set is DT/O

B/HP for attacking
I find anything with Dragon tail is decent for defending.

B/HP is best unless your trying to attack dragonite or tyranitar.

I use two DTs beetween dodges and still dodge consistently.

Also, DT/HP is a better matchup against Dragonite and Tyranitar, two very common gym defenders due to high CP.

This. Furthermore, if you dodge every other quick move, even against the shortest cooldown moves (water gun / dragon breath, etc.) you can safely fit in 4x DT and dodge every other attack. Not to mention the fact that these "fast" quick moves have such a low base damage that you don't even receive the full 75% damage reduction because of the rounding in the damage formula -- it's not necessarily optimal to dodge every one of them.

DT is superior in most circumstances if you are an experienced battler / dodger, but it's not like Bite is bad. If you get Hydro Pump, the quick move isn't really that important; however, I prefer DT in this instance because DT + anything is good on defense.

Higher damage and energy gain, and it's still quick enough to dodge efficiently against most common gym defender movesets. And as I explained above, it's not necessarily optimal to dodge every one of the "fast" quick moves (e.g. Water gun) because you won't even get the full damage reduction based on the rounding in the damage formula.

Both sets are very good, and there's little difference between Bite and DT, but experience and the numbers give a slight edge for DT as far as I can tell.

Cheers!

After 6 Gyarados (4 Twister, 1 Dragon Pulse and 1 Outrage), I finally got a B/HP. I must admit that it's a hell of an attacker, he can throw HP very quickly and it hits very hard. I hope my 8th one will come with Dragon Tail to see how is that move (all my Dragonites got SW except my 1st one).

DT/OR is also very good and very close in performance as compared to Bite or DT+HP.

Double dragon-type moves are very good in current gym meta, as u often find dragonites in gyms, and not many types resist it as compared to water.

Did some test here - https://youtu.be/mVg0oON5uBQ
