Shiny Pokemon = "Save your candy" comment
Has anyone figured out that the "save your candy" comment made by Niantic, was most likely in direction correlation to the appearance of Shiny pokemon. Glad I have been farming karp since before the Water event started. I have over 600 karp candy and we still have 5 more days of the event to go. Just a matter of time before I find my first shiny. Who do you guys think will be the next mon to get the shiny treatment? Here's hoping for Charizard or Dragonite.

I don't think they are related. I have a belief that candies will be tied to move changes (ie move tutor) and it will be used as a payment to change moves. (ie 100 candies to change Steel Wing to Dragon Tail.) Something along those lines. Might sound stupid, but its better than nothing. Or perhaps it could be tied to trading. You can't trade for a mon unless you have so many of its candies. That way you can't just trade your way into completing your dex. Who knows, could be anything. But it won't have anything to do with shinies...I can tell you that much.
I agree that they're not related, but I don't think the "save your candies" comment was in relation to major game changes either. My guess is that there will be an Easter event with egg-themed bonuses (e.g., maybe making hatch distances for eggs 1/2 of normal, but more likely buffing the duration/effect of lucky eggs and thus making mass evolutions more attractive).
