Any idea on general rarity of shiny magicarp?

Is it 1/50? 1/500? Ive caught about 50 magicarp and no shiny yet. Want one as i never see magicarp in my biome outside of this event.

I doubt it's that rare. I've already seen a number of people get it within the first two days.

Someone usually wins the lotto each week, even though they only had 1 ticket to enter with a 1:millions chance.
You don't take probability by individuals but instead of the group.

As long as 4096 people caught magikarp, then 1 should be a shiny...even if they only caught 1 magikarp themselves.

I doubt it's that rare as many people managed to find one already. I think it's more closer to 1/100

It's super rare and your best chance is right now when Magikarps are spawning like crazy. Lol a red Gary would be so cool...... I wonder what it's trade value would be. In any case I'll be farming Slowpokes over Magikarp for more C/IB Slowbros ??.

My son is 8 and is a huge Pokémon fan. He started me off in PG, and after I got hooked on it he finally got his own account. He's now level 26 and "our" original account (mine) is level 36.

So this afternoon we were hunting...we both saw a Karp. Mine was 80cp and normal, and his was 152cp and shiny! And it turned out to be 96% IV!!!

This same kid used an incense last week and got his first Lapras (you know, before they were common).

So the same magikarp was shiny and not on different accounts? So each encounter has a chance?

Yes. Shiny magikarp is based on the encounter ID, and not the spawn ID, so it seems to be a general measure against spoofers / bots, etc. I think it's pretty great, and I'm expecting some time soon pokemon IVs / Pokémon level will be randomized to the player based on the encounter ID. This would go a long way toward stopping spoofing.

I've caught enough karps to evolve 2 Gyarados since yesterday.

So, aroud 200 Magikarps.

No shiny yet.

I've caught well over 100 magikarp since the event started and I did get one shiny.

It has total crap IVs, so now I'm tortured.
I can't drop 400 candy to make a red gary with IVs less than 25.

1/4096 is the rarity in the main game series for any shiny pokemon (it used to be 1/8192), there's no definitive data for this game yet.

I did about 500 ? yesterday, played 12 hours, and were at 2 water biomes, and nothing. ?
