GamePress

Suggestion: Best performing attacker per type

First of all, I think gamepress is doing an amazing job with it's content. There's one suggestion I'd like to make:

To me, when attacking a gym I try to get as many advantages as I can, so when I choose my team to attack an enemy gym I try to select the attackers that will match up best against the gym's defender's, this means that if I see vaporeons and Rhydons, I'll choose plant pokemon, if I see gyarados' I'll choose electric pokemon, if I see exeggutor I'll choose fire, ghost or dark, etc.

Now gamepress does have the Highest DPS by type list, which is useful, but sometimes its deceiving, the clearest example is Water pokemon, yes the pokemon with the highest DPS is starmie, but the pokemon you really want to use is clearly vaporeon because of it's superior bulk, which will allow you to KO more pokemon of the relevant type (ground, rock or fire) than starmie would, so my suggestion is, instead of, or as a supplement, we'd really like a list of the pokemon that will deal the most damage before fainting for each type (actual best attacker by type).

Thougths and suggestions from the comunity are greatly appreciated

Best regards and keep up the excellent work you are making.

Damage before fainting isn't the only factor in determining how good a Pokemon is, by that logic Blissey would be the best attacker.

Different players value different attributes over others, and so will have different opinions on who their best attacker is.

Someone who values their time will value DPS over total damage dealt. Someone who doesn't collect many stops, or does so infrequently will value damage dealt per HP lost / potion efficiency.

Don't knock it 'til you try it ... I love using my Pound/HB Blissey to attack gyms. It's a great choice if you want to just spam click and not worry about dodging at all.

Yes but you are not taking type bonus into account, yes blissey migth deal more "generic damage" before fainting, but she will probably not kill more pokemon than a specialist in killing x type, a vaporeon will kill more rhydons before fainting than any blissey because he deals more damage to a pokemon with double water weakness than blissey would dealing neutral damage, that's not even taking time into account.

On the other hand Blissey migth be the best choice for "general damage", maybe even for psychic or fairy damage, but in those cases (if that's the case) it should be noted how time consumming that would be

Then you're contradicting yourself since you stated:

... we'd really like a list of the pokemon that will deal the most damage before fainting for each type (actual best attacker by type).

Even with same type Pokemon that have the same moveset there's no definitive best Pokemon for that type.

I don't see how this is contradictory, my suggestion is a list of the pokemon that would deal the most damage of a given type, this doesn't mean the pokemon should be the same type, Snorlax or blissey migth very well be the best Psychic or ghost type attackers even if they don't get STAB in their respective Ghost/psychic type moves.

As a guideline, the idea is... if there's a pokemon that's weak against a certain type, what's the pokemon that I should use to figth that, taking the least % of damage in the figth. In other words, what pokemon can take out the most pokemon of X type before fainting.

Lists are very general and should be taken lightly. That being said, I have something like this - which also takes into account movesets.

The major issue is that I have generalized the defense and it doesn't take advantage of plus matchups whereas in real life, you would almost always pick something with type advantage in a gym battle. I mostly made this list to find out the best prestigers. Its quite an interesting spreadsheet I've made though.

The problem with defense is that in the end, CP is a major factor, regardless of how bad a pokemon is when defending. My point is when you attack a gym, you want to attack with the pokemon that will deal the most damage to that particular gym, and while 6 dragonites migth do the job, it's a job better achieved by a team of 6 pokemon that all have advantages vs some of the gym's defenders, and that's what I'm advocating here, yes we can "use" an attacker tier list where the best attacker is dragonite, but since dragon is only SE vs dragon, dragonite migth not be the best attacker vs a gym full of Rhydons for example, we'd be better off using vaporeon and exeggutor, because they will deal more damage in less time to that particular gym.

For me that's equally to best counters or you just go down the list sorted by CP and take the highest CP mon with double type attack, no? For me a list of best counter would be more helpfull taking into account multiple type weaknesses

Not in all the cases, for example there are some movesets that deal more damage than others even with the difference in stats, or there are some pokemon with stats so much better than others than even with an inferior moveset deal more damage over the course of their life.

Starmies watergun/hydropump is way harder than vaporeons one, and if you know how to dodge you can kick two or more pokemons from gym before faint with starmie,

The thing with vaporeon is like you said ''the one you want to use because bulk'' is only because the bulk and people who dont dodge or dont know or only dodge charge

Another example for this kind of stuff is gengar, alakazam and espeon, they hit hard and fast dps, but if you cant dodge then are mediocre and a glasscanon pokemon which could faint before kicking 1 pokemon

In my case i always use my starmies over vaporeons, the only time i use vaporeons are when i dont feel like dodging and just tapping

Vaporeons do better than Starmie in any circumstance. Dodging all, dodging only charged moves, dodging nothing.

They will do an avarage of 100% more overall damage over Starmie in any of these situations because he will endure way more damage, generate way more energy with HP and thus dealing more damage in the long run.

If you can take out 2 mons with a Starmie, you should probably be able to take out 4 with a Vaporeon using the same playstyle.

But if you dodge with starmie and vaporeon, vaporeon will still come out on top, killing more pokemon than starmie would, same goes for Alakazam, you'll probably get more milleage out of a good ZH/P or ZH/C exeggutor if you dodge, in the case of gengar, there's no other ghost pokemon that competes with him (Misdreavus doesn't really compete).

Being more noob friendly is a nice bonus for some of these pokemon, but even if you dodge (all or just specials) they are more than likely the better choice.

If it's type counters you are looking for, there is a great list at:

http://goptimiz.fr/en/counters

This page will show you the top 5 counters (with moveset) for each fully evolved pokemon form. For what it's worth, Dragonite is basically a top performer against most pokemon, T-Rex is also great.

Since STAB and Super effective have the same damage multiplier in PoGo, the particular importance of type counters is lessened from the main series.

That list looks excellent, thanks for sharing.

Edit. There's something fishy about that list...it lists exeggutor as 3rd best counter to Rhydon, after Vaporeon (which is normal) and Polywrath (which is not thah weird I guess), but exeggutor is listed with BS/SeB, which is odd, SoB it's supposed to be better than SeB, I don't get how they arrived to that result.
