Non-trivial ultra ball decisions

More of an open question here - what goes through your head when it's not trivial whether to use an ultra ball or not?

So basically, you're obviously going to use an ultra ball in some cases:
- Dragonite/Snorlax/Lapras/etc...
- Any evolved form you don't have yet
- Anything really high leveled

Outside of that, how do you decide if something is worth an ultra ball? Is a max-level (for your trainer level assuming you're 25+) Eevee worth an ultra ball? What about a high level Dratini you'll transfer (i.e. you just want the candy but since it's level 20+ it has a decent chance at getting out)? What about a low-level first form pokemon that you don't have the evolved form of yet? is that last question decided by how strong the evolved form is?

If you don't have a general strategy, maybe just reply your ball decision to the following options (assume pokeballs never use razz and great/ultra always do):
Trainer level 27:
1. CP770 Eevee
2. CP42 Snorlax
3. CP480 Dratini
4. CP300 Growlithe (don't have Arcanine)
5. CP814 Exeggcute (have Exeggutor)
6. CP114 Abra (don't have Kadabra/Alakazam)(remember 99% run chance)
7. CP40 Magmar (don't have yet)

Bonus: Answer A) outside of hallowe'en event and B) during event for double candies

I decide to use a great ball on a case by case basis using the formula "Will I be pissed at myself if this runs away because I only used a berry and a pokeball?" Really, every decision has to be evaluated based on what YOUR pokedex and candy levels are like. I would never waste an ultra on an Eevee, but they are everywhere here. But you might not see them as often.

Another way to decide is to figure out what you want out of this game? Are you trying to battle? Use your greats for high CP prevolutions like Exeggcute, Dratini, Slowpoke. Just trying to catch em all? If you don't have a pokemon in your dex, use everything you have.

And as you noted, Abra/Kadabra etc run immediately so use greats on those.

  1. A) Great B) Great
  2. A) Ultra B) Ultra (don't have a Snorlax)
  3. A) Great B) Great
  4. A) Great B) Great
  5. A) Ultra B) Ultra (since very rare)
  6. A) Great B) Great (already have Alakazam)
  7. A) Great B) Great (already have Magmar)

Other personal Ultra situations:

1) any Lapras (don't have one yet)
2) any high CP starter (particularly second and third evo - never came across one of the latter)
3) strong Dragonair and any Dragonite
4) any high level and high tier fully evolved Pokemon (e.g. a 1888 Poliwrath or a 1993 Vaporeaon I came across recently)

These answers are assuming I'm in the same scenario as you. For my situation my answers would be different.

Yea that was the goal. It's only partially my situation - I meant people to sort of think of a similar pokemon (e.g. you could swap Arcanine/Exeggutor, etc...).

I'm guessing the great on Snorlax with low CP because the catch calculation is probably over 99% anyways?

Surprised with the ultra on the Abra - I've always Great+Razz on Abra and never missed one. Maybe it's the curveball though.

7)Great/Great

I always use berries with great and ultraballs when its a pokemon I want.

Outside of halloween, I put ultraballs only on Dratini over 600cp growlithe over 500cp, slowpoke over 900cp, and all the pokemmon that seems lvl29 with good IV (almost max possible wild catch)

Depends greatly on how easy it is for you to obtain items. I have a few pokestops I can reach from my condo, so I usually have a ton of extra great and ultra balls.

It also depends on your goals. I don't care to rush to pokedex completion, so I don't use ultraballs on things like Abra. I also want bonus lucky egg xp for rare 2nd/3rd tier pokemon, so I will typically avoid catching them unless I think I'll never be able to evolve it (eg Muk as I have only ever seen 2 Grimers).

Instead I will always use ultras on top tier pokemon that I need more candies for. This turns out to be a really short list: Dratini, Exeggute, Poliwag, Eevee, Growlithe. Snorlax/Lapras as well obviously, but I have seen 2 & 0 total in the wild, so not like it makes a dent in the ultra supply. I have so much Slowpoke candy from a nearby water biome that I don't need more candy or it would be on the list too.

If I am over 50 ultra balls then I'll start using them for any high CP pokemon.
