Gengar as attacker

As much as I love gengar and try to use him when I can for gym battles it's undeniable that he still isn't an optimal attack against today's meta. He's incredibly squishy and usually will never be able to get through more than one pokemon of the same cp as it. Is there any match ups that you'd recommend using a gengar (I've got 2 sc/sb 2200 cp gengar)?

Gengar requires a lot of dodging, if you're not a good dodger, like myself, he will suck.

2200 is a pretty low level Gengar? He's like the old Pc/P Zam a absolute glass cannon that's a great generalist attacker. If you can dodge efficiently it's a a beast.

He's actually not a great generalist attacker. I'm not sure you can say he's a good generalist when his ghost moves are resisted by the two most prominent defenders in the current meta, Blissey and Snorlax.

His theoretical DPS is very good, and he's fun to use. But he's not a great generalist attacker. And I say this as someone who loves Gengar, he's always been one of my favorites from the main series.

As a generalist, Shadow Claw / Sludge Bomb is better in key matchups.

This...

I think Zam is a better "generalist" for this reason...Previously, since fighting moves were so weak, people used other mons to fight Snorlax so having a Zam made sense since Zen Headbutt was resisted too (if Snorlax had it).

Zam would also resist Psychic and Zen Headbutt on Blissey now and doesn't take super effective with Dazzling Gleam so he is much more useful I'd guess to dish out the pain.

Gengar, against the current gym high CP defenders don't really offer much benefit and is a negative as mentioned due to ghost moves being resisted so that high damage is only doing 0.8 now.

Too bad I am stuck with my Sucker Punch/Focus Blast Gengar...If I get enough candies, I'd probably wait before evolving another Gengar since Hex compared to Shadow Claw seems 50% less DPS and has a much longer cooldown.

I've noticed you enjoy picking arguments w/ other site users about the strangest things. Let's just get this out of the way not all of us are level 39 and have 10 DB Dragonites? Gengar is a great attacker for anyone 35 and below and you know why? It has a high DPS w/ SC/SB or Sl B. It also won't time out and at worst you sacrifice it for the next mon and it's pretty inexpensive to heal up.

Pointing out that Gengar's attacks are resisted by the two most relevant defenders isn't "picking an argument," it's merely stating a key fact when assessing whether a particular mon is a great generalist attacker.

As I said, I like Gengar a lot -- and he has some uses -- but a gym sweeper he is not.

I use Gengar as a delete button for that one defender I think is better off in its Trainer's inventory

I think he's a good counter for espeon, if you don't have a tyranitar. I prefer him to umbreon for this for attacking.

Unfortunately not, because of its secondary poison-typing. Both are SE to each other, both do lots of damage, a fight is short and bloody, decided in ca. 10 secs.

But this is not exactly what i would call a counter. The counter to espeon is umbreon.
