An idea for gyms
I think the "holding a gym" model isn't really going to work. Also I don't see many solutions that don't seem like they have about as many downsides as upsides. However, what if besides the 10 coins you get for staying in a gym you also get X amount of coins when you place? And to inspire a more varied placement the coins awarded would be based on a tier system of some kind where common but good defenders awarded a little less coins than some other defenders? It could still be limited to X number of collections per day. Seems like it would give those with an area where collecting after being in a gym for the total time is not an option also.

Playing devils advocate I would say that if the big 5 defenders are in a gym one could collect from you would be a hell of a lot less likely to prestige it just to add a Pokémon that in most areas will get shaved out within the hour leaving you with nothing but wasted time.
What if these two ideas were combined and your placement award was based on Pokémon already in the gym i.e. You get less coins if you add a second Snorlax instead of a new type Pokémon?
Personally, I would revamp the Gym Scene by Doubling the Rewards per defender with the Same Cap.
Meaning Holding 5 Gyms would be the "max" and same collect as holding 10 Gyms.
This would increase the motivation for Gym takeover and turnover since that Level 10 Gym you need to take down is now worth 20/1000 and the 20 minutes where it might not be worth 10/500.
I'd combine this with a Hard Limit of 15 Gyms that someone could defend. I'd let people put in 16th but it automatically returns your lowest CP Defender to you. The idea here would be to limit the total amount of space a player can monopolize. Freeing room for other players.
I like parts of this idea since there are too many people with too many gyms...But I'd go harder with a limit of 5 total, get 20/1000 coins/dust.
With the much larger gym playing population, there just aren't enough spots in gyms I feel and people resort to gym shaving now. It's very rampant and sometimes, I see nice far away gyms shaved by even more than 1 mon.
Downside is that 5 gyms are sorta easy to take over and you can literally drive to 5 gyms within 3 miles and get 100/5000 now even easier than before. This would be bad for Niantic.
I think a simple start is just limit to 10 gyms MAX....
...AND have other ways to earn coins/candy/dust like attacking stagnant gyms or something...
That said, being in more gyms now, I sorta like the system in my own selfish way. That and massively changing would screw over all the old time players massively.
Like nerf Dragonite and, say make him a tier 7 or 8 in a new defensive ranking where double weakness puts you below all others, would piss off tons of folks.
Won't piss off me though since I still have 0 Dragonites.
I like both of these suggestions and I think they have merit however in my area there are too many players, too few gyms, and too many spoofers to ever collect. I have 3K snorlaxes and Blisseys that I place every day and I have collected one time twice on the same Poke in months. Why not have a partial payout for taking down and placing too?
