Does total distance with buddy remain if you switch your buddy?

I have over 600 KM with my Snorlax buddy. I am thinking of switching to Lapras for Halloween. If I go back to my Snorlax will the 600 KM remain or will that get wiped to 0?

I kind of like seeing 600 KM with my buddy so not sure if I want to switch if I lose that.

It stays. So when you switch back it will still show total distance with that buddy. The distance walked is buddy specific. So if you have say a different Snorelax it will show zero KM walked. But the one with 600km will stay.

It stays. I've switched out of my buddy before and when I switched back, the track completed picked up where it left off.
However, any incomplete distance covered will be deleted.

HEADS UP: Not applicable for Snorlax, but I believe it does reset if you evolve that buddy.

NOTE: The behavior may be different if you evolve them coming from the buddy screen as opposed to coming from the Pokémon box. I can't confirm/refute that.

Also adding my confirmation that I've switched back to a buddy and as long as it's the exact same pokemon it keeps the distance (switching to a different Snorlax will show 0km as it wasn't your buddy yet!).

I don't know about evolving or powering up. If at some point you want to power up the Snorlax but can't because of this, I would suggest walking a little with someone else (e.g. your Lapras) and then powering it up WHILE it's your buddy. It will probably maintain the difference if it is 'changed' while currently your buddy. Obviously test it with something you don't care about first though, as 600+km is no small feat (holy crap man).

Evolving does not reset the count, given that my Dragonair still counts as having walked 70+km after evolving from Dratini.

As an aside, anyone else theorizing this may having something to do with certain Gen II evolutions that were originally based on "happiness" (e.g. Eevee into Espeon/Umbreon)?

Evolving doesn't rest the total distance counter, but it does reset your current distance counter. Finish off your current Buddy counter before evolving to avoid any wastefulness.
