I tried redditing and googling just to see if there had been any new development of this but I haven't found anything that's more concrete. Is this still potentially an event that will happen in the near future?
I am running out of pokemon storage... :(

Depends on your storage amount and how close you are to your next level. If your storage is pushed then evolve stuff. Also if you are close to your next level then go ahead an do some evolves. Personally I just hit 35 recently and need over 1.3M exp to get to 36 so there's no real rush to evolve there and I also recently upgraded my mon storage so I have room to spare mons for evolving. So unless you really have a need to rush I would adivise waiting.
TLDR
Unless you have immediate need to clear space or are close to reaching your next level you might as well be patient.
I will say that we are having an event for easter almost for sure, but at this point there is not any proof of it being double XP or anything else. Saving your candies and evolution does not hurt, at least for me, I am level 35 and need almost 900k more to the next level, no difference between doing 100 evolutions now or save them for a "posible" event and do 300 or 400 then, I have 750 mon storage and enough space to keep on saving evolutions.
If you are running out of space there are 2 options, you are saving completely useless mon or you have too many evolutions. So either transfer the stuff you don't need (no point on saving for example 20 santa or festive pikachu, just 3 of them for example will do), or do a lucky egg and keep saving afterwards.
