Should I spend my dust on a low level high IV flareon?

Hi all, I have started to check my pokemons' IVs and I've found out I have a 350 cp flareon with 15 15 13 as IV values and flametrhower. I have a 1400 cps one with a terrible 25% perfection and fire blast. Should I spend my dust to power up the first one the second or should I try to get a new one? Thanks in advance for your time.

Short answer is NEITHER.
Stardust is one of the most important resources, and flareon is simply not worth it.

Disagree, Flareon has higher attack and defense than Vaporeon and the OP's Flareon is the perfectly imperfect Flareon (having points missing in the HP stat instead of the other stats).

There is no cap to stardust, as it's renewed by catching any pokemon and hatching any egg. True, it will disappear relatively quickly if you use it to level up too many pokemon, especially if you're just looking to determine their EV's.

It even has the better charge move, Flamethrower, with better DPS and the ability to fire off the move before the bar is charged.

That said, keep the 1400 CP one for battling purposes.

So are you suggesting to stop powering up the both of them too but to use the 1400 one to battle?

I'd level up the lower level one at least a few times and confirm its IV's. That's a good long term investment Flareon. There's otherwise no reason to release the other Flareon, and every reason to use it in/on gyms until your average kept pokemon's CP exceeds its.

I'd have to say I personally disagree with the use of stardust on a Flareon. It is an awful gym defender because of the prevalence of strong water types as well as the high DPS of Water Gun, and it has very low HP.

Flareon isn't a very useful or good attacker either, as there are very few grass-type gym defenders commonly seen. The main one is Exeggutor, but even with fire being super effective and water being not very effective, a Vaporeon or any other water type with Water Gun will still do more DPS to it. Vaporeon and a few other water types also have the added bonus of having much higher hp.

Because of how resistances and weaknesses are scaled down in this game, even if said Exeggutor had Seed Bomb or Solar Beam as a secondary move, the higher DPS and hp of Vaporeon/other water type would make up for the 1.2x damage increase to them vs. 0.8x decrease to Flareon. Keep in mind that Exeggutor's primary move must be psychic.

So regardless of perfect IV's and whatnot, Flareon should not be a pokemon that you waste your stardust powering up, especially one that is at such a low level already. For utility purposes, the higher CP Flareon that you already have with bad IV's will work as a fire type to use if you want the super-effectiveness.

IV's are what affect a Pokemon's max or min cp for a given level, and so if you follow my recommendation and don't waste your stardust powering up Flareon, that means that the level will not change and so what CP it is at after evolving is all that is relevant, not the IV's.

Just my two (or maybe a few more) cents. Take it with a grain of salt; if you really want to level up your Flareon then go for it, however as I hope to have shown you, logically and statistically it isn't the best move.

By my calcs Flareon actually has a slightly higher weighted DPS as a gym defender once his attack stat and the curving cooldown on gym attackers is taken into account (assuming simply that damage per second is equal to move power*attack / cooldown). This is before weakness and resistance are taken into account.

You seem to be right as to Flareon's offensive performance, although I think that you should treat Vaporeon's unweighted DPS as "only" effectively 2x that of Flareon when unhindered server connection allows you to dodge.

He's also good for defracting teams given the prevalence of Water types spurring Grass usage.
