Twister :(. ????
So this is the second Gyrados I have evolved with twister. Last time I used my 100% carp I found like 5 level below me this time I had to gather 470 some candies before I found a <90% one and 29th or better level before evolving it. And got twister again!
Is there anything useful about it. Other then being one of those as#$&$# who slips an inferior Pokémon into their own teams gym because of it has high CP. Making the gym weeker. Just so they might not have to take over one more gym to get to max of ten for the day. Rather get a candy like I did for the last one before I did that. Just thought I'd ask if someone found a niche for before I transfer it.

Everything in the game has something that counters it well enough so that it will lose in a single head-to-head matchup. The best you can hope for is being effective enough so that the counter can't be used to clear out multiple defenders in the gym. And I think in general, it's more likely that a person would have problems clearing out two Gyarados's with Twister than two with some combination of Dragon Pulse/Hydro Pump.
There, the error has happened earlyer:
With the 2 Rhydon in a gym. Yes, of course, why not putting another High-IV-easy-to-expolit-double-weekness-PKM as "defender" inbetween? They can share their fear and warm each other in cold winter-nights.
I do not mind changing my attackers and i love those gyms - for high speed tear-down.
I wouldn't say Gyarados always makes the gym weaker, it forces somebody attacking the gym to either bring a Jolteon (which is kind of weak and not great in most other common matchups), or to take it on with something where Gyarados isn't as much of a defensive liability.
Also, I find Twister to be the best defensive charge attack. The other two do higher damage, but they aren't used as often, and are so clearly telegraphed that they're never going to hit unless there's server lag. Twister gets thrown out all the time, it comes fast, and there's no real way to distinguish it coming versus another Bite (for people that only dodge charge attacks).
I honestly think Twister is a good defensive move for Gyarados simply because of how easy the other two are to dodge and how used people are to dodging them.
In the end, Twister will deal much more damage since almost no one bothers dodging it (and it's hard to dodge since it deals damage so early).
Of course, a Jolteon will still always win against a Gyarados unless it doesn't dodge Hydro Pump. So instead of dealing 28 damage for a dodged HP or 20 for a dodged DP, it's better to deal several 25's from twisters that are unlikely to be dodged.
Well thanks for the reply. I have come across then in gyms also. Powered right through though never really took notice. I will keep it and only put it into gyms I just took down. I just can't put anything other then a Rhy, Vap, Snor or Lap into any gym that other team members have taken the time to prestige and drop a decent defender into. Might as well keep it I guess, but just seeing it there every time I open my Dex up. Reminding me of all those wasted hours farming it. Lol not sure how long it's going to stay there.
Gyarados isn't really any worse of a defender than Rhydon, or even Vaporeon in certain situations. All three crumble against the right counters. It depends what is already in the gym. If there are three or four Vaporeons in a row, sticking a Gyarados in the middle of them will be more effective than putting in another Vaporeon.
As part of a mixed gym it's really not that bad - If I'm taking down a level 10 gym I'd rather have a gym where I don't have to keep swapping attackers. The problem comes when over half the gym is Gyarados.
Mine are both B/DP, but the principal is the same - If I take a fresh gym I'll sometimes put a Gyarados in then quickly prestige it up to level 6 or 7 creating plenty of empty spots. It allows the creation of a mid-high level gym very quickly. Obviously you've got to hope that other players put in a decent selection of mixed type defenders ...
Over the past few months i've actually found new respect for Twister as a defender. You barely have any time to dodge, it's super quick. Probably the fastest charge move in the game. And with 5 charge bars, it might as well be called a quick attack. And most important of all, it's a dragon move (the whole time I thought it was a Flying move). So it dishes out 1.25x damage to Dragonites. It actually eats up decent chunks of HP. So power him up and take advantage of his high CP gym placement.
Twister on a Gyarados is horrible for prestiging a gym because it hits Raichu and smaller Jolteon pretty hard. A big, high level Jolteon isn't all too bothered by it.
I got unlucky twice with Twister, but at least my first one got DP. I'm currently debating wether to power up or go for another evolution.
I consider twister the best defender move by far. Ultra fast (not rare to see two consecutives, even three), dragon typing, not horrible in terms of DPS (having in mind its 5! bars and Gyarados great attack) and not usually dodged. Also, the presence of one (and only one) Gyarados "forces" attackers to bring an electric mon, that is useless for most of the other possible match ups.
I just realized the philosophical implications of getting twister. Imagine, you spend weeks, maybe even months getting 400 magikarp candy...only to have a crappy reward. Sound familiar?
Many times in life, people will invest a lot in something (project, business), and it will fail. Imagine putting years of work into a business only for it to go bankrupt due to factors out of your control!
Yeah...I really thought this deeply.
Twister DOES have one use though, and that's on defense. It's damn hard to dodge. Unfortunately, the damage can be easily tanked, even with a low hp pokemon like Jolteon.
I took down a lvl 9 gym recently. From the bottom at place 3,4,5 were Gyarados. #4 had Twister and got me to loose twice. Uff dodging it was really difficult. I agree Gyarados makes not a decent defender but sending a 100%IV one is something I can't get, maybe bc I have nether hatched anything better then 98% and caught only 1 100% mon.
