Dragonite...should i bother
I know theres been plenty of discussion about this before, and id rarther not be another one asking...
But ive read allot of it. And still cant make up my mind, im just seeing allot of mixed views and opinions.
I got a 2000cp Dragonite, 87% IV
Steel Wing - Dragon Claw
Is this worth powering up to be a defender?
Yay or nay?
Or am i just best holding the precious dratini candy...keep farming and hope for a better one in the far off future
Cheers

with my frostbreath/ icebeam lapras i can dodge every single attack from SW/DP dragonite, however i may take a hit if it has dragon claw. DClaw makes me want to save my charged move for later, so I think it is more effective against ppl that dodge every attack. For instance, in my opinion:
SW/DC best against dodgers.
SW/DP most dps if not dodging.
I would not power up that mon, since dragonites are only goood for offense. DB/DC best moveset for offense, save for one like that.
So, when you attack a gym, have you ever run away or quit because of the moveset that one of the defenders has? Or do you just use an extra potion/revive and power through? If you, like the vast majority of trainers here, simply take down whatever gym you've set your sights on, then the defenders moveset DOES NOT MATTER (ok, slightly more or less annoying but not a game changer).
For defense, CP potential is far more important than moveset, unless you just want to have the textbook perfect moveset (in that case, who cares what we say here, you already know your answer; likewise if you have a floor for IV's of mons you power up).
So it really just boils down to if you want/need a 3K+ defender - I have none at level 32 so I damn sure know what I'd do!
This really...
For defenders, it's all about CP...Not all gyms are taken down completely in my area so being on top helps a ton.
This makes all Dragonites and generally high CP mons probably worth powering up ONLY (again, this is why you get so many different opinions), if lvl 10 gyms stay in your area and are mostly stagnant.
This is also ONLY IF you need more defenders.
I just caught a 92% Eevee at level 7 and if it turns into a Vaporeon, have no problems powering it up to max level since I have a total LACK of defenders with high CP.
Stardust is plentiful for me (over 800k now) also and Eevee's are generally everywhere.
The reason why you're seeing mixed opinions is because these questions are really case-dependent and people have different needs! So there is not and never a standard answer.
What I know is that:
Is Dragonite a solid defender (hard to defeat)? No;
Does Dragonite get high gym placement? Yes. In your case, yours will have higher CP than any other species 100iv mon at the same level!
Therefore:
If you want to top gyms, power it up;
If you want to build solid gyms (usually with collaboration), then choose Snorlax/Lapras/Chansey, or even Vaporeon.
Hope that can help.
I agree with everything bioweapon said, and I'd add that the answer depends on if you want an attacking or defending Dragonite.
If you want a defending dragon, they don't come much better than this so you should power this one up.
If you want an attacker, you should try for one with Dragon Breath.
EDIT: Just noticed that you specified "defender" in the OP and I totally overlooked it haha
Agreed it varies a lot by situation, especially current gym placement in the area and rarity of candy. (How rare a candy is varies a lot not only by area but also by person. I've seen people around my level mention they have 8 arcannine with bad move sets and that grolithes candy is rare there and yet I only have two and don't think it's that rare). I disagree to some extent that a good defensive Dragonite isn't a good defender especially when mixed into a well set up gym. For people with a good Lapras it's easy to defeat but around here that's rare.
If he's your only Dragonite I wouldn't power him up. Will seem like a waste to then have him just sit in a gym, locked to you. Save for a second Dragonite and hope for a good attacking moveset you can have fun with.
I just (yesterday) hit level 32 and I have two Dragonites:
2837CP, Level 30'ish, with Steel Wing and Hyper Beam. I use him for Defense. He's been at the top of a gym for about two weeks now. I'd say it's because he's an awesome defender, but how would I know....we can't see the battles. Probably has more to do with the many Snorlax, Rhydon, Vaporeon, Gyarados, and another Dragonite sitting below him and a semi-hard to park near gym location. I guess having him sit in a gym is supposed to be a good thing; but makes you start wondering if the daily payout would have been worth a lot of candy&stardust to power up for a high gym placement?
2900CP, Level 30'ish, with Dragon Breath and Hyper Beam. He's a go to Attacker for me in most gym battles! Dragon Breath is awesome!!
And while I do think a "perfect" moveset is mostly for perfectionists and number crunchers, there does seem to be validity to some sets being much better for attack or defense than others... as I found with this SW/HB being not great when attacking....especially after I later saw Dragon Breath in action.
I'm only 4 Dratini's away from evolving a 3rd Dragonite! And at this point I'd rather use my candy to get another Dragonite than power up the ones I have. In fact, I specifically chose high level Dratini's to evolve even though they had lower IV's, because I knew candy was hard to acquire and I wanted the Drag's immediately usable, and then more Drag's sooner (My first one has 16of45 IV and the second has 21of45 IV; and they still seem to work fine.)
You're right where I am. Level 31.5 with two dragonites. One DB/DP at 3020, and a DB/HB at 2926. 44 dratini candy, and I've decided to save for a third dragonite instead of powering up the first two much more.
My DB/HP is from a 75 IV Dragonaire I caught in Florida with friends, so has sentimental value. The DB/DP is 84 IV and was from a wild caught dragonite that started at 256 CP.
I want to switch both over to attacker roles, but their both stuck in gyms! Time to make a third. The slow dratini hunt continues - caught one yesterday in the frickin rain that popped up on Sightings
Thanks for all the replies,
im considering powering it abit more now, as its moveset doesnt seem like a total waste of time as i thought when i first evolved it.
And yes, as some people mentioned,
I did specify it would be a defender.
Im fully this moveset is not goinf to work for offence.
I was more torn between dragon claws effectivness in defence vs dragon pulse.
And if its still good to invest or not without having dragon pulse.
(but it seems there's also going to be personal preferences and opinions on the matter)
