The breakdown of what changed in the APK file indicated some code was changed related to the radius of gyms. So I don't think anything was changed with respect to making GPS more accurate, or changing how they extrapolate distance from the potentially buggy GPS data they get (ie, egg distance). They just made the game less likely to kick you out of a gym you're attacking/prestiging as a result of GPS drift.
GPS drift on new update
So, guys, do you see any change? tbh, I don't quite see much difference.. avatar still moving around and you get "moving too fast" prompt while standing still or right after launching the app.

I still get kicked out of gyms quite often from gps drift.
No change for me here.
Biggest change for me now is game is force closing during gym battles more frequently than before the update.
This is not an UPdate for me but rather DOWNgrade.
Shouldn't have updated
iPhone 6 Plus and tried deleting the app then re download but no change
In Windows, when I update the app in iTunes, the old version of the app is sent to the Recycle Bin. Until the Recycle Bin is cleared, it is possible to revert to the previous app version.
1) Restore the version from the Recycle Bin.
2) Navigate to the iTunes media folder, then the app folder. Delete the new version.
3) Open iTunes and go to app library.
4) Right-click on the app (read the names, it might be missing the icon) and select "Get Info".
5) An error message will pop up, click "Locate". A window should open in the iTunes app folder. Select the older version of the app and click "Open".
6) Finally, delete the app from the phone and reinstall it through iTunes.
This will work for a couple days until Niantic forces the update.
Actually I was too quick to judge. Left the phone overnight and the drift distance was not recorded towards hatching and buddy as it was before so definitely they have updated something. The drift is still there (this is a technical issue not a Niantic one), but apparently it's no longer recording the distance when you're standing still even if there's GPS drifting, I guess they just updated the code reducing the radius.
I can actually elaborate on how much the drift affects buddy walking or egg hatching. I cycle about 6 miles to or from work, which equals to about 9kms. I'm only getting credited 3.6kms roughly per trip. Whatever they did, it seems to effect walking less than those that jog or cycle and it's probably speed related. Either way, this update to 'accuracy' is from from it.
