Rhydon advice

I have a 98% Rhydon that I was disappointed to get Rock Smash and Earthquake and trying to decide if I should power it up anyway just to have a uber high CP Rhydon for gym stuffing figuring if anyone gets as high to it in a gym they will beat the gym anyway even though it doesn't have the ideal defensive move set.

Rhyhorns are not particularly rare where I am. I caught 175 total since the game started but this is the only one greater than 90% that I have.

I have evolved 5 others with mediocre IVs that I just use as gym stuffers that I never spent any dust on. The only ones I have with Mud Slap are 69% and 82% IV which just isn't exciting. I figure as common as they are where I am, eventually I get one with Mud Slap >90% and dust away on it.

The question is do I invest in the Rock Smash one for now?

First of all, Rhydon is probably one of the worst possible gym defenders. That being said, you can do whatever you want if you want to stuff gyms with bad high CP pokemon for people to easily tear down (or alternatively for your team to be able to prestige like it's swiss cheese).

If you've already got a decent DB Dragonite, then Rhydon is basically useless on your attacking team. But if not, you can power this guy up to fight Snorlax, as Mud Slap is basically equal with Rock Smash in that particular matchup.

Otherwise, I would just keep it as a trophy perhaps. Defensive moveset doesn't really matter with Rhydon because he's a trash defender.

How would you rank these Pokemon as defenders with the optimal defensive moveset: Exeggutor, Golem, Rhydon, Gyarados, and Vaporeon?

Out of the list you mention, Vaporeon and nothing else (even then Vapes aren't great defenders).

Exeggutor is easily cut down by bug and fire (choose Pinsir, Scyther, Flareon, Charizard, or Arcanine)

Golem and Rhydon are double weak to water (Vaporeons aplenty to do this job)

Gyarados is double weak to electric (Jolteons aplenty to do this job).

If I saw a level 10 gym consisting solely of the mons you mention: Exeggutor, Golem, Rhydon, Gyarados, and Vaporeon, even if each of them were level 40 and max CP, I would not hesitate to spend 15-25 mins tearing it down.

Yeah I won't disagree with that statement. I personally like to think my Confusion/ Psychic Exeggutor and Waterpulse Vaporeons cause my opponents some trouble, but just wishful thinking on my part.

So for you there are only snorlax and lapras as good defenders?

God I wish I had that luxury. I appreciate high Cp defenders any way I can obtain one. Vaporeon and Exeggutor have obtained me a lot of daily bonuses. While Exeguttor has a clear weakness I think Confusion/ Physic still hit like a truck.

Much as I would like it to be otherwise, given the current state of the game, the answer to your question is Yes.

Good defenders are for me pokemon which need a long time to get killed like snorlax or lapras (no real counters, high hp/def stats).
An other factor is a good placement in the gym(high cp) dragonite, rhydon, gyrados

Assuming optimal defensive movesets :
Vaporeon>Exeggutor>Rhydon>Gyarados=Golem

Dragonite is very difficult where I am. There was one dratini nest the first month of the game but after the first migration that seem to have disappeared from the wild forever. I met a guy that had a ton of them he said he got from traveling to California for work. I see them in gyms often here but never in the wild. I don't fear them because I have a Lapras that can chew on them pretty good.

Nothing wrong with having RS. In terms of cooldown and energy, RS and MS are almost exactly the same. RS may not have STAB bonus, but it's still 1.25x effective against the likes of Snorlax and Lapras. What you should be more worried about is ending up with Megahorn. Your Rhydon is actually great!

Yep. Against Snorlax MS and RS are basically equal. RS is slightly higher damage, but lesser energy than MS, but it basically evens out over time.

You're better off using Arcanine, Flareon, or even Dragonite (if you dodge) against Lapras though.

I have a 97,6% Rhydon (Rock Smash/Earthquake) and a 95% Mud Slap/ Earthquake. I like the RS one. There is no big difference to the MS/EQ .If I had enough candy, 98%, i would power him up.

True rhydon isn't a strong defender, but not everyone has 10 dragonites/snorlaxes/lapras to put into gyms. Rhydon can get you a high spot, and getting a high spot may be enough to gain a bit of longevity in a semi-stable gym.

Unfortunately, alt-accounters who chip away at the bottom of friendly gyms will eventually push you out the bottom, but a high cp rhydon can at least get you a good spot for a while. They're just like Arcanine before the buff/nerf. Not great defenders, but they have their role.

That's pretty much where I'm at with him. Dragonite is never seen where I am and no drantini's in months. Caught one wild Snorlax that is crap and my only Lapras is busy being my buddy. Therefore, I have 2 maxed 91% Vapes that are my best defenders otherwise. Rhyhorns are common and therefore and easy route to a high CP mon

If you have gym that is regularly attacked, but then quickly prestiged back before fully destroyed and you are always one of the guys whos getting kicked out, then 98% Rhydon would be nice to get higher spot to avoid elimination.

We have one gym here like this and my team mate uses Rhydon and it has worked great to avoid constantly getting kicked out.

My highest Rhydon is 80s%, but got Rock Smash/Megahorn so yours could've been worst. :)

If you don't have a ton of defenders and haven't wasted dust on any Rhydons, then I'd power it up if you wanted to get some coins and gyms are stable in your area.

My wife powered hers up since it would be her highest CP mon and at over 2800, it's been in a gym for 4 weeks now...(280 coins for that 1 mon) so unless you had a ton of defenders like all the folks here, I'd power it up and that would be an easy decision.

I haven't powered my Megahorn one, but it's fairly low level (maybe 10ish) so I'd probably just past in case gym rankings eventually change and I'm left with an D move Rhydon on both attack and defense.

Where do you people live? There are no gyms in the city that I live that can survive more than 1 hour at the most. Unless it's a gym in the mountains or boonies

Live in SoCal suburbs...

I suggest leaving the prime city with high population of players and finding either smaller cities that have level 10 gyms or gyms which require people to get out of their cars to access.

I've noticed people are simply lazy and most folks, especially now (in rain, snow, cold), don't want to WALK a little...

I especially like the gyms that aren't spoofed that you have to hike to, to reach. Also make sure it's within your team's area since even in my local suburbs, the gyms turn over everyday since these are daily coin gyms so you need to find areas that your team is dominant since 1 level 10 gym will always be torn down, but 10 level 10 gyms will require a lot of work from 1 or 2 dedicated people and about 5 hours (30 mins - 1 hour per gym) to 10 hours to tear them all down which the dominant team in that area will rebuild all of them by the next day.
