Not at all! IV's only really matter at the endgame. A good Pokemon with good moves and a high CP will be sucessful. Don't forget that CP also considers IV's, so if a Pokemon with bad IV's has a higher CP than others of the same, it's stronger regardless of IV's, with moveset being considered

Yeah because I have 62 grimer candy but my highest grimer at 781 "wouldn't do much in battle" but if I evolved him he would be close to 1700 cp .. Nice to hear he wouldn't be pointless because grimer took me forever .. 5-10 spawn a day in long beach at the pike if wondering

Shikuu is correct, even if the IV's are low, the Pokemon will still fight at his CP level. But that doesn't mean you want to invest scarce resources in a low IV pokemon. I would use a wild low IV pokemon if I needed him, but not evolve and power up a low IV starter. If you have the candies, just be patient, a good IV will show up eventually.

High IV Pokemon worthless in gyms if CP/move set are really bad.

Not at all, I will evolve a high CP, mediocre IV eveee anytime. If he turns into a Vaporeon with the right moveset, I may even dust him since it won't take much.

Like others have said, IV affects cp. A 2000 cp Nidoqueen is a 2000 cp Nidoqueen. The difference is the level the pokemon is at, and its potential. One with bad IVs might barely break 2000 cp, but one with good IVs may be able to be powered up past 2,200 cp.

What I did early on for gym defenders was evolved real high level pokemon with bad IVs. They were still giving me 1700-1800 cp pokemon, which fits right in the middle of gyms around here. Now that I am level 30 I am replacing them with high IV ones. For example, my 1860 cp Nidoqueen was just replaced by my 2200 cp Nidoqueen. But I would only recommend doing this with pokemon that are easy to come by.

iv means everything, it tells u how good or bad in ATT, DEF and HP,
cp means nothing, its only a refection of your trainer level
back to your question, gym battle is mainly about type advantage, and, how strong is your pokemon.
assume everyone power up their pokemon, WHICH THEY WILL, ones with low iv are not going to do the job well

If you don't know what your are talking about, you should stop giving people your opinion.

No, not necessarily. To explain this smoothly; high IVs just simply means the pokemon can max out at a higher CP. Therefore, when a pokemon has been fully evolved, it's value in attacking/defending gyms are determined by whether or not it has the most optimal move-sets.
Any CP/Any IV + shit move-sets = worthless.
High CP/HIgh IV + best move-sets = amazing.
High CP/Okay IV + best move-sets = amazing.
Low CP/High IV + best move-sets = amazing. (depending on how low of a cp)

Also, the damage between the "high IV" and the "okay IV" is only about a 10% difference, from what I've heard so I wouldn't stress it too hard.
So, remember: find it's value for gyms in it's move-sets.

Daily reminder you guys massively overvalue IVs

I think the overvalue of IVs stems from people equating "perfect IVs" with "perfect move-sets", or overall "perfect" Pokemon.

1% IV difference for Vaporeon is 3CP. So compared to a "perfect" Vap an 70% one has only 90 less CP when they are the same level.

In long term that 90 cp might get you higher in a gym, but i get your point IV are overrated, most important thing is the correctly moveset.

Vaporeon's strength comes from its HP, with low iv (well, you might still get good iv in hp and bad for the rest), your Vaporeon no longer elite as a tier, even your CP is high due to the multiplier.

There is no point leaving your best Pokemon in a gym as it will always get taken down by a determined attacker. Best to slot your highest CP but worst IV and worst moveset Pokemon into gyms. Save you best ones for attacking.

Low IV mons are ceirtainely useful to battle in gyms, just don't evolve them or power them up. Stardust and Candy are scarce resources (candy less so, but still) so don't waste them on mons that at the end of the day, will have lower CP than others of the same level with higher IV's. What I do is... capture every pokemon I see, select only the ones with above 82% IV's (It's aprised as a marvel or something like that) and evolve those, then out of the ones you evolved, select the ones with A grade movesets (For offense or defense), and power those up. I have found that it's more important to power up defensive mons, as the higher the CP, the longer it will stay in the gym.

Hope it helps

Muk is really useless in gyms anyways, though
