Overview
Shadow Mewtwo is one of the hardest-hitting raid bosses that we have ever seen. With a tremendous Attack stat plus the Shadow Bonus, its Confusion alone can deal crushing damage to a lot of its counters. Add to this the fact that Shadow Mewtwo will become enraged and raise its Attack and Defense stats to make it even more dangerous for about half of the fight without Purified Gems and this can be a brutal match. While we normally point out top-DPS options first and foremost for our raid guides, building some TDO on your team can make a tremendous difference given the sheer power of many of the attacks that they'll be taking. Note that Shadow Mewtwo cannot use any Elite moves as a raid boss, so don't worry about facing Shadow Ball or Psystrike variants.
Approach
Team composition
-
It takes 8 Purified Gems to subdue a raging Shadow Mewtwo. If you plan to subdue it, then figure out how many your entire raid group has and who will use them in order to make the raid substantially easier.
-
If you intend to do it the hard way, try to score an average DPS across all teams in the neighborhood of 100 DPS to get through the rage period.
-
-
Front-load any glass cannons that you may bring for maximum power, then anchor with tanks to stay in the game
-
Mega Gengar's DPS is outstanding, but it's going to drop very quickly against Confusion.
-
Mega Banette can have similar performance to Mega Gengar depending on Shadow Mewtwo's moveset
-
Dark Type Mega Evolutions have lower DPS, but they tend to be tanky enough to stay in the game when it matters, meaning they're still very viable.
-
Try to stagger Mega Evolutions between players in order to keep the Mega Boosts active for as long as possible.
-
Try to get your raid group to agree on team-type order. For example: if someone is leading with Mega Gengar, try to get the team to front-load Ghost Types in order to take advantage of its Mega boosts.
Dodging strategy
- In case we haven't already said it; Shadow Mewtwo hits hard! Dodging can be important for keeping attackers alive, but don't dodge so much that it kills your DPS.
- Know when to let a Pokemon faint. If it's unlikely to reach another Charged Move and Shadow Mewtwo's next big hit is looming near, let it faint and move on to the next Pokemon to keep from dragging down your DPS.

Shadow Claw | Shadow Ball | Best |
The undisputed Ghost king, Mega Gengar is the ultimate glass cannon for this raid. It has the absolute highest DPS among all available counters, and will take huge amounts of HP from Shadow Mewtwo while on the field. The one problem with this toxic ghost is its weakness to Psychic Type moves, which means that it's going to be rocked by Confusion, potentially dropping before Shadow Mewtwo can get to its first Charged Move. But Mega Gengar is still worth using here due to just how absurdly fast it can rack up damage, especially if you don't intend to throw Purified Gems at Shadow Mewtwo.

The little brother to Mega Gengar, Mega Banette is actually pretty decent in comparison to its big-brother ghost for this raid due to its lack of a weakness to Psychic Type movesets. Its DPS is never going to be quite as high as Mega Gengar, but it definitely has its advantages for this raid.

The highest DPS option among the Dark Type Mega Evolutions, Mega Houndoom actually has a few advantages that make it an attractive choice over the competition. Its DPS is actually very solid, and it sports resistances to Ice Beam and Flamethrower alongside a double resistance to Mewtwo's Fast Move options and Psychic. These facts make Mega Houndoom very with considering for a spot on your team over the big-name Ghosts. It doesn't care for Focus Blast, but that's Mewtwo's slowest and easiest to avoid Charged Move, so that's not a huge loss.

While it may not quite have the DPS of the above, Mega Gyarados makes up for it with sheer staying-power. The single bulkiest Mega Evolution currently available for this raid, Mega Gyarados does not quit and laughs in the face of Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Psychic, and both of Shadow Mewtwo's Fast Moves. However, Mega Gyarados does not like Focus Blast or Thunderbolt, so its performance will tend to vary with moveset.

Basically a worse Mega Houndoom for this raid, but still a good backup.

The Pseudo-Legend of Unova comes with a number of strong advantages to its name. First and foremost is its great mix of DPS and TDO, which allows it to score heavy hits and stay in the battle for a long time. Second is its great set of resistances, coming in strong against Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Psychic, and both of Mewtwo's Fast Moves. It doesn't appreciate Ice Beam or Focus Blast, but it still covers the majority of movesets extremely well.

Psycho Cut | Shadow Ball | Best |
The classic mirror-match brought into a new era; bringing Shadow Mewtwo into this raid is great because the raid-boss Shadow Mewtwo can't pack Shadow Ball, meaning your Shadow Mewtwo can come in without having to worry about any weaknesses while resisting the ever-troubling Confusion. Shadow Mewtwo makes a great partner for most of the top attackers on this list, and can bring great balance against specific movesets.

Another classic brought into the current age, Tyranitar was once a prime counter to Mewtwo, and now their Shadow formes can do battle once again. Nothing can out-TDO Shadow Tyranitar on average, making it the premier tank-counter with very viable DPS to back it up. Just note that Shadow Tyranitar will not survive a direct hit from Focus Blast.

Shadow Claw | Shadow Ball | Best |
Another old face returned for vengeance, the Renegade Pokemon makes its return to cause Mewtwo as much pain as possible. Another tank backed up by worthwhile DPS, Giratina - Origin Forme fears only Ice Beam while resisting its way through most of Mewtwo's other coverage moves.

Always skirting just outside of its rightful position as a top Dark Type raid counter, Darkrai makes for a very solid vanilla Dark Type, fearing only Focus Blast.

Hex | Shadow Ball | Best |
A great option for Ice Beam, Flamethrower, or Focus Blast in particular, and a good all-around counter thanks to its lack of weaknesses to any of Shadow Mewtwo's moves.

While easily taken down due to its low defensive capabilities, Shadow Weavile actually has the highest average DPS of all non-Mega counters.... but its weaknesses to Focus Blast and Flamethrower can make it risky. Fortunately it resists Confusion, so it can likely survive into one or two Charged Moves in most cases, maybe more if it's facing down Ice Beam or Psychic.

While not the best, Shadow Houndoom can use its great set of resistances to put a fair bit of pain onto Shadow Mewtwo.

A bit of an oddball for raids, Gholdengo's Steel/Ghost typing gives it resistances to Ice Beam, Focus Blast, and all of Shadow Mewtwo's Psychic Type movesets, so its solid average performance combined with that means that it can perform pretty well. Just watch out for Flamethrower!

Astonish | Shadow Ball | Best |
While definitely the less frightening of its two formes, Hoopa - Confined's Ghost typing combined with its Ghost moveset actually makes it the stronger DPS option of the two....

Astonish | Shadow Ball | Best |
...while Hoopa Unbound's higher Attack stat and more defensively-oriented Dark typing makes it the superior TDO option for most movesets, especially Psychic type moves which it triple-resists.
