This site is the best. DB/DC is the ideal offensive move set for Dragonite by far, especially if you're a dodger. You won't get STAB with HB. And it has a long wind up time. It's a tough call for you with dratinis being rare where you're from. From my experience having extreme patience is very rewarding. I probably would not power up your Dragonite in your case. Maybe you can continue to keep him as a long term buddy and hopefully by the time you have enough candies you'll be able to evolve another dratini. Btw, it's a theory that has never really being confirmed - move set may not be totally random. Higher CP mons you evolve may give a better chance to get the ideal move set. Just a theory.
Yet another Dragonite question.
Hi guys. I apologize for another Dragonite question. I'm not exactly new to the game and this site since I have been lurking in the shadows for quite a while now. I'm just having a dilemma. My only Dragonite (82%) has DB / HB. Another site claims it is the best moveset for Dragonite yet here, which frankly is my go to source for all things Pokémon, states otherwise. I just want to know, is DC really stronger? By what margin? Should I power this up as well? Dratinis are quite rare here so I really treasure this one because I transfer all Pokémon if their IVs are below 82%.

This is all anecdotal - the high IV hatched mons when I evolve usually give me the best move sets. Wild mons I evolved that are below level 20 I usually got screwed on move set. Same with very high CP mons I usually get screwed. Not sure if this means anything but could level 20 mons be the sweet spot for best move set when evolved? Just food for thought. Maybe Niantic rewards us by buying incubators. Haha.
If I were you, I'd leave it as it is. Its CP is too low now. Save your candy and level up yourself pass level 30 then choose the highest CP Dratini you may have to evolve. IVs do not matter much as compare to movesets.
For IVs calculation and CP simulation, I find this site: "https://pokeassistant.com/main/ivcalculator?locale=en" is extremely helpful.
Think about your chances. 1 out of 6 to get the dragonite you want after grinding again.
I have 2 2800 offensive dragonites. Db/Dp, Db,HB. (I know you are asking about dragon claw but pulse is rated closely to claw) They perform almost exactly the same besides the wind up. It still completely tears through opponents.
It's up to you but is it really worth waiting and risking?
I had a dratini with a low CP like yours but higher IV. I evolved it to Dragonite and ended up with DB|HB just like yours. I powered him up to 3000 with no regrets. It would took me 3.5 months to get this one, never seen one in wild... chances are low to end exact moveset u want. I say power it up and enjoy the game battling. He is a beast regardless!
I have never seen a Dragonite in the wild as well. Already caught a couple of Snorlax and Lapras but no Dragonite. I guess I'll be keeping him as my buddy since I can get the other candies with ease from where I live. O have literally no experience battling using a Dragonite since this is my first one and can't really use him because of his low CP. Can't wait to pump him up though. Probably I'll stick with him till I get a higher IV and CP Dratini / Dragonaire before even thinking to evolve another. Thanks!
I have all three attacking sets, the difference is negligible only around 1-2%. But honestly Hyper Beam is my least favorite since it is inflexible and doesn't deal SE to dragonites (don't have lapras). DB/HB is still a great moveset though, it was my first dragonite and powered it up to 3k cp. It tears through gyms with ease.
First of all, Dragon Claw is about 6% better than Hyper Beam in terms of raw damage. If you take dodging into account (because with DC dodging is a lot easier than with HB), Dragon Claw will perform even better. I don't have Hyper Beam Dragonite, but I do have one with Dragon Claw and Dragon Pulse. To be honest, it's hard to notice any real damage difference between the two (in theory it should be about the same as between DC - HB), but what makes Dragon Claw superior in my opinion is how mobile it is to use.
Dragonite with Dragon Breath / Dragon Claw is not only insanely high damage but also it's easiest to dodge anything with because the moves are so fast. This is what makes Dragonite the best attacker in the game even though technically Snorlax with Lick & Hyper Beam will do more damage before it feints, but it kills enemies slower and is a lot harder to dodge with.
That being said, Hyper Beam is by no means a bad move especially when you pair it with Dragon Breath. I've always said that any Dragonite with Dragon Breath is good for attacking no matter what its charge move is. It might not be as strong as Dragon Claw, but if we are realistic here, how likely are you to get one with Dragon Breath / Dragon Claw in the near future? Even if you managed to get enough candies the probability is 1/6 which is not very high. Heck, you might evolve 20 Dragonites and still not find a single one with that specific moveset.
Seeing that you don't really have the candies right now, I wouldn't be in hurry to power it up, but if you haven't got a better one until you have enough candies for powering this up, I'd say just go for it. You won't be disappointed even with this moveset and you will rarely see yourself using other Pokémon. Life is too short to find a perfect Pokémon of each species and even if you manage to find a better one, good! Then just collect more candies to power that one up too.
Whatever you decide to do with it, good luck.
As already said, the main problem with Hyper Beam is the long cooldown time.
If I am afread of opponents charged move, I sometimes finish him with my quick moves only and dodge all the time.
If this opponent is dead, I get another opponent, and I start the battle with my (now fully charged) charged move, definetely before the new opponent has his own charge move ready.
Maybe this tactics works with for you and your Dragonite too. I would definitely power him up and not wait months to get another 1 of 6 chance for a better moveset..
I got lucky and have 2 SW/DP and a DB/DC on my dragonites. You cant waste 125 dratini candy you really need to power that up to 2900-3000 and stick it in a gym. Unless you have 10 dragonites to choose from theres just really no choice. The amount of work you put in to build that means you have to use it to at least get daily stardust/coins. HB on attack is fine but it wont be efficient against certain movesets like BS Snoralax or Psycic Eggy or water pulse Vape but it might work temporarily for you if its your best attacker. Stab DB is a monster quick move and will serve you very well on its own..Then once you get something better you can stick it in a gym. Theres no gaurantee your next Dragonite has what you want in fact your as likely get another one with the same moveset.
